A first snowfall of the season covers Grundy County with 1.17 inches by 9 a.m. Roads are slick but accidents are limited to minor fender-benders. State police report 12 accidents overnight with one injury. Local agencies deploy 11 snow units and cinders to improve road safety.
The 311-foot Liberian registered freighter M V Melias began taking on water 17 hours before dawn and sank in 12 000 foot depths of the Gulf of Mexico. All 25 crew members were rescued by a Greek merchant ship Aegis Sonic and Coast Guard units.

An off-Lake Erie storm that hit Buffalo with 19 inches of snow doubled back and dumped up to four feet in southern Erie County New York. Hamburg and Evans reported heavy totals including three feet and four feet, with the Thruway closed from Hamburg to the Pennsylvania border.
Kendall County Board will consider a proposed 2,761.72 budget for fiscal 1977 at its December 14 meeting. The estimate shows general fund expenditures of 1,127,664 and other funds totaling 1,633,537.72 with various line-item increases and a 600,000 tort judgment from 1976 affecting comparability. Audits, highways, health, mental health, federal aid, and other funds show specific changes. total levy set at 1,294,503.31 with additional figures pending.
Public Health Director Joyce Lashof said Illinois will not alter its swine flu vaccination plan after a Missouri case. She noted vaccine use is prioritized, with 50 of 102 counties having high risk clinics and few counties completing general population immunization.
William Waters 53 of Route 4 was unanimously reelected chairman of the Grundy County Board. He was first elected Dec. 2, 1974, and was the sole nominee. The board swore in newly elected officers and county officials in the Grundy County Courthouse.
A three bill package would raise lawmaker pay from 20 000 to 27 500 and daily expenses from 36 to 44. Governors salary would rise to 85 000 and other state officials would see large jumps. Gov. Walker opposes rises while Thompson favors moderate increases amid mixed public reaction.
WGN meteorologist Harry Volkman told about 200 at Morris Community High School that December will be cold and dry with larger moisture arriving in February and March. He cited sky watching as a simple method and noted a high barometer this fall.
Charles Edward Goodman, 22, of Chicago, surrendered to the FBI in the National Bank of St. Anne robbery case. He is in custody on a $50,000 bond and faces a hearing. a warrant had been issued earlier for the Nov 19 armed robbery in which $76,705 was stolen. The other two suspects remain at large and Goodman could face up to 25 years and a $10,000 fine if convicted.
Edward Keto of Manteno sues Illinois Central Gulf Railroad for 3 million dollars after his wife Cora Keto, 21, died December 6 1975 when her car was struck by a northbound Amtrak train at a Peotone crossing. He alleges negligence by the train driver and lack of warning signals or gates.
