Illinois House reapportionment avoids at large vote

A bipartisan seven hour meeting produced a new map for Illinois 59 House districts. The plan will be filed with the secretary of state and set to stand until 1973, with districts used first in 1966 elections. The split over political advantage centered on swing and marginal districts.

Begin Airlift For Refugees Starts From Cuba to U S

Cuban refugees begin a large scale airlift to the United States with the first commercial flight from Veradero to Miami carrying 93 Cubans. The program, negotiated by the U S and Cuban governments, aims for 800 to 1,000 refugees weekly, with priority to relatives in the United States and parents of children here.

Glendale's Pride named grand champion barrow at Exposition

Iowa hog Pride shown by Roy Keppy of Davenport wins grand champion barrow at the International Live Stock Exposition. The 220 pound Yorkshire Hampshire crossbreed was judged the finest finish among near 650 hog entries. Keppy, 42, earns his third grand championship at the show, having previously won the grand champion carload and carcass titles.

Break-Ins at Two Service Stations on Division Street

Police report Tuesday night break-ins at two Division Street stations. Al’s Gulf Service, 1357 Division St., gained entry by forcing a back door and stole 39.47 in coins from an unlocked register while an attempted safe break was noted. Norman Oil, 1323 Division St., had a pane broken in a men's restroom. entry was abandoned when the interior door to the office was found locked. Both burglaries were discovered early today.

Shoplifting Losses Up in Recent Years

FBI reports shoplifting as the nation’s fastest growing larceny with a 93 percent rise in five years. In the past year police logged 184473 shoplifting cases worth nearly 5 million dollars, with women comprising most offenders and professional bands targeting suburban stores.

Weather forecast calls for mild, partly cloudy Thursday

Fair and warmer weather is forecast by the U S Weather Bureau for tonight with a low in the lower 30s. Thursday outlook is partly cloudy and mild with a high in the upper 40s and similar conditions for Thursday night and Friday. At Collins Weather Station the Tuesday high reached 33 and the low 21 with 9 am reading at 35.

Honor County 4-H Leaders Recognized at Dinner

More than 100 adult 4-H leaders received awards at a Tuesday night recognition dinner at Bethlehem Lutheran Church attended by 78. Doris Curtis presented the awards and Richard Wagner spoke about his International Farm Youth Exchange experience after returning from South Korea.

Grundy County Plans First Step Toward Junior Colleges

A meeting at Morris Community High School tonight will hear Gerald Smith of the Illinois Junior College Board explain the new system. County Supt. Arthur Meadors will chair with Dr. William French and Elmer Rowley also present to address questions about Joliet area junior colleges. The session aims to help Grundy County high school boards decide whether to affiliate with a junior college district or remain outside.

Farmhouse Near Mazon Hit By Morning Fire

A two story farmhouse two miles south and east of Mazon was destroyed by fire that began on the second floor around 8 a.m. The Zilm family of seven lost the second floor contents while the first floor was largely saved. Owners Walter and Mrs. Claussen of Wilmington held insurance on the property.

Destruction of Regiment 7 Tops Communist Losses in Vietnam

In Saigon the 7th Regiment’s destruction marked the week’s highest toll for South Vietnam with 459 reported dead, 185 missing, and 861 wounded. U.S. deaths fell to 40 for the week, while Viet Cong losses reached 1,539. American forces conducted air strikes near Hanoi and Da Nang, with naval and Marine actions elsewhere, and a grenade incident in Saigon injured civilians.
