Chicago faces a looming strike by 19 000 teachers as Mayor Daley and Gov Ogilvie clash over funds. Teachers plan a Tuesday vote on a wage hike after the city funded only half of promised increases.
A Wednesday night sideswipe near Gardner left two women injured and in good condition at St. Joseph Hospital Joliet. Mrs. George Henzie and Miss Pamela Boggetto, both 19, were passengers in a southbound Pontiac driven by George Henzie 21.
Mazon couple Kenneth A Misener and wife along with Ronald A Aves of Belvidere are Illinois finalists in the Pure Milk Association contest that drew 18 couples from Illinois Wisconsin and Indiana in Chicago. Winners will be announced at the PMA fall delegates meeting September 20 at Pheasant Run Lodge near St Charles and may become National Young Cooperators delegates at the National Milk Producers Federation convention in New Orleans November 30 to December 4.
Col. Michael D. Healy will take command of the Green Berets in Vietnam succeeding Col. Alexander Lemberes who is stepping down after a year marked by a murder investigation. Rheault and seven others faced charges earlier in the case. Lemberes will return to the United States for treatment of a broken ankle. Healy previously led the 1st Brigade of the U S 9th Infantry Division and has long Green Beret experience.
Collins Weather Station records a high of 86 with a 62 low yesterday and 75 at 9 am today. Warm humid air remains, tonight partly cloudy and warm in the 70s, with Friday hot and humid near 90. Saturday stays hot and humid with partly sunny skies. downtown Morris noon reading around 81 with high near 90.
Judge Thomas R. Clydesdale of Oglesby announces candidacy for circuit judge in the 13th district. The seat, vacated by Howard C. Ryan, covers Grundy Bureau and LaSalle counties. Nomination at a summer convention. salary $27 500 for six years.
A nine year study of 4 486 British widowers aged 55 and over found grief doubled the risk of death within six months after wives died. The death rate was 40 percent higher than expected with many cases traced to heart or circulatory issues. Dr Murray Parkes links bereavement to psycho endocrine changes from emotional stress.

Israeli commandos conducted a hit and run raid on an Egyptian army headquarters at Man Kabad in the Nile Valley 200 miles south of the Sini line. No casualties reported. Egypt says aircraft attacked near Asyut, while France lifts arms ban but withhold 50 Mirage warplanes.
Two young men, Hershel Fee 24 of Lockport and Terry Rinker 16 of Grand Ridge, were in fair condition at Morris Hospital after a two car crash on Illinois 47 six and one fourth miles north of Morris at 3 15 p m Wednesday. Sheriff Pierce said Rinker swerved to the shoulder to avoid Fee and was struck on the left front fender. Witnesses included William Brooks Alfred Meador Mrs Terrel Moyer and Elmer Blanchard. Both cars suffered left front damage.
Taxpayers must pay the second and final real estate tax installment by Tuesday per Grundy County Treasurer Sophie Thorson. A late payment incurs 3 percent on the first installment and 1 percent if the second remains unpaid. Payments accepted weekdays 8 am to 4 30 pm at the county treasurer's office in Abelsourthouse.
Barker Excavating Co reported a 9,000 pound bulldozer left on a vacant lot in Portland after Rental City failed to deliver it to a provided address. Police found only the machine’s cleated tracks and no Barker Excavating Co. or address matching the request.
A two day walkout by LaSalle-Peru Township High School teachers ended with a tentative contract. The agreement sets a June 30 expiration with arbitration and an $7,000 starting salary, while leaving some details undecided. About 80 of 110 teachers belonged to Local 1243 and did not cross picket lines.
All students in Morris Elementary District 54 must report at 2 p.m. Tuesday for registration at their schools. Bus pickup starts at 1 p.m. that day. The session will be brief and regular classes resume Wednesday.

Westville Village Council votes to abolish real and personal property taxes for 1970 and beyond while relying on Illinois income and sales taxes to replace revenue. The plan cuts the current tax rate by 31 cents per $100 and saves about 15 dollars yearly for a $10 000 home, though residents still pay taxes to other local units.
Martin Sopoey, longtime Lake Forest drugstore operator opposite the commuter station, stops selling cigarettes after 15 years. Police guarded the integrated New Iberia Senior High School as about half of its 1,850 students attended after a clash Wednesday between rock throwing Negro students and police. An 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew was imposed citywide after tear gas was used to break up a protest and seven Negroes were arrested for disturbing the peace.
