A lone gunman at Crombie's Dairy 1207 Division St forced clerk Alice Phelps to surrender $154 from the cash register at 8:55 p.m. The 20 year old witness described the suspect as 25, 5 8, 140 pounds with fair skin and dark rimmed glasses. Police investigate with county and state assistance.
The Coal City village board approved a wage increase for the night policeman to as much as 5175 per year. The raise was proposed by Commissioner Glen Allen and seconded by Robert Hill Jr, passing unanimously. A resignation from Anton Scubic was read, effective late this month. The board approved two zoning changes to reclassify parcels, and tabled a sewer disposal system vote until the next meeting.
AP reports in Manila at least 19 dead and 339 admitted as a hemorrhagic fever outbreak spreads there. Health officials say the outbreak began three weeks ago with about 100 new cases daily. the fever is mosquito borne and causes internal bleeding.
Cicero officials requested immediate National Guard mobilization to prevent disaster as open housing march planned for Sunday loomed. Town attorney Berkos warned that Cicero Police could not secure order with only 90 officers while Dr Martin Luther King Jr rejected a cancellation request.
The weather forecast notes clear skies and cool nights with a 50s low. Wednesday will be sunny and cool with a lower 70s high, followed by a fair, slightly warmer Thursday. Collins station logged 75/49 Monday. Morris downtown reached 64 at 11 am after 58 at 9 am.
A Monday night explosion at the Church of God in Christ in Plainview Texas collapsed the building killing a woman and injuring 53 others. Rescue teams cleared debris as a gas leak and an electric organ are suspected causes with 12 people trapped briefly.
Federal mediator E Richards calls a 10 am Wednesday meeting between striking Local 626 and Diamond National Corporation at the Armstrong Street plant site. The first talks since the noon last Wednesday strike aim to seek progress toward a settlement. Diamond National notes a peaceful area while court actions limit picket interference.
Morris Pool manager Steve Benz released the final two weeks schedule. From Thursday to Sunday the pool will be closed in the morning and open 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Aug 29 to Sept 2 the gate opens at 4 p.m. if warm. Labor Day weekend hours are 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sept 5 marks the season’s final day. About 37 000 have paid admission, two thousand more than last year.
Bids were opened for a five foot storm sewer along Waverly Street from Morris Hospital. Frank Weber submitted the lowest bid of 54061.55 with an alternate of 78811.55. Other bidders included J E McElwain Co, S S ViLand, and O'Brien Construction. Mayor Aage Hansen announced results after the council meeting adjourned due to absence of members.
Hollywood AP reports Francis X. Bushman died at age 83 after a fall at his residence. The early film icon, who began acting in 1911 and was slated for a new project, sustained a fatal second fall following an initial injury to his hip and shoulder. Bushman cherished his 1915 San Diego World’s Fair billing King of the Movies, a title he kept for life despite not acting since the 1920s.
A violent blast at the Inca division of Phelps-Dodge Cooper Products Corp in Fort Wayne Indiana destroyed two office buildings and raised fears of heavy casualties. Emergency crews searched the debris as authorities investigated the cause of the explosion.
The Morris City Council adopted a $238,935 tax levy for 1966 67 by unanimous vote. The package fixtures include $86,450 from general corporate levies and $27,000 for the garbage fund. The total budget calls for $916,105 with $678,170 from non tax sources. A second squad car and improved patrols were discussed alongside a new refuse pickup proposal from Wilmer Brockman of Seneca.
Daniel Escobedo 29 faces unlawful use of a weapon charge in Chicago. The hearing was continued to Sept 26 after both sides agreed, following Escobedo’s 1964 Supreme Court victory that he had been denied counsel. His lawyer Marshall Schwarzbach said the 1964 ruling will be used as a defense.
The Rev. Lloyd M. Bowden of Immaculate Conception parish is named to the new diocesan board of education. The nine member panel directs the diocese education program across DuPage Ford Gran y Iroquois Kankakee Kendall and Will counties. Bowden, a Chicago native, studied in Du Page schools and earned a MA from St Mary of the Lake Seminary in Mundelein in 1948 before his 1949 ordination. He has served Will County parishes, led St Joseph's Manhattan since 1961, and acts as diocese synodal judge and Will County CYO director.
