IRS Proposes End to Tax Exemptions for Racially Discriminatory Private Schools
Washington activists welcomed the first step toward revoking tax exempt status for private academies founded to keep white students out of integrated schools. The IRS proposal would require schools to prove no racial discrimination to qualify, potentially affecting up to 3,500 of about 18,000 private schools and their major source of gifts. Local advocates support tighter rules, noting prior lax enforcement and long use of private schools to avoid desegregation orders.

Talmadge may escape interest on improper expenses
Senator Herman Talmadge has reimbursed the Senate more than 37000 dollars for improper expense claims and volunteered to pay interest, but it is unclear who can determine the amount. Senate ethics staff doubt any body holds authority to levy interest, leaving the principal repayment as the likely remedy.
