Peaceful surrender ends Chicago consulate hostage crisis
Two Croatian gunmen held eight hostages in the West German Consulate for ten hours on Michigan Avenue before surrendering. Deputy Police Superintendent Victor Vrdoljak, aided by Ivan Bilandzic’s talks, helped persuade the captors to release others and surrender to the FBI. Six employees initially escaped. the exhibit at the Chicago Art Institute remained open.

Americans Celebrate First Trans Atlantic Balloon Flight
Ben Abruzzo Max Anderson and Larry Newman the three balloonists from Albuquerque New Mexico completed a 3200 mile flight in Double Eagle II landing near Evreux Normandy after nearly six days in the air. The trio displayed the US Stars and Stripes and the French tricolor as tens of thousands cheered. Authorities tightened security while fans plucked souvenir fragments from the balloon. President Carter praised the achievement in a telegram and Paris planned ceremonies to honor the explorers with a gold medal of youth and sports.

Ugandan dictator Idi Amin sent a rambling message to Emperor Hirohito on the 33rd anniversary of Japan’s surrender.
