MIT Expert Panel Urges Radical Tech Drive For U.S. Steel

A report by MIT professor Julian Szekely for the congressional Office of Technology Assessment says tariffs and anti-dumping actions won't solve America’s steel crisis. It urges government funding for radical new methods like plasma arc steelmaking direct casting and oxygen injecting steelmaking, noting U.S. costs lag Japanese mills and productivity is lower. The study warns urgent long term planning is lacking and current spending on newer tech would be wasteful without breakthroughs.

Future of liberation theology at stake in Latin America

UPI reports Christians in the United States watch CELAM III, the Latin American bishops conference in Puebla, amid a clash between conservative and progressive camps over liberation theology. Medellin's 1968 reforms spurred church action against inequality and oppression, with many clergy harmed as the church faced military regimes and landowners.
