Morris Community High School schedules start on Monday August 29 with 1 30 p m report for all students to receive course assignments homerooms lockers and fees Freshmen orientation and new student registration occur August 26 at 1 30 p m in the gymnasium.
Morris High School board voted 3 2 to start a 44104 10 project for a new drive from Union Street to the gymnasium, enlarged gravel lot, and blacktopped access. Lighting upgrades by Ayers Electric include mercury vapor lights for the drive and building perimeter with completion by Sept 23 before the first home football game.
Attorney for Richard Speck asked the Circuit Court to appoint psychiatrists and psychologists to evaluate his capacity to stand trial and mental state. Public defender Gerald W. Getty urged joint panels to examine Speck on July 13 and 14 as the courtroom crowd of about 140 observed. Speck appeared alert in a dark suit for a 15 minute session with Judge Herbert C. Paschen.
The Department of Housing and Urban Development approved a $2.03 million loan for Eisenhower College in Seneca Falls New York to build four dormitories.
Cooler tonight with a low in the upper 50s. Friday will be fair with a high in the lower 80s. Saturday looks cloudy with a chance of showers and little temperature change. Collins station logged 88 high and 64 low. Morris downtown 75 at 9 am and 83 at 11 am.
The Morris Community High School Band with 41 members travels to Springfield to compete in the State Concert Band Contest and enjoy the fair. Ten marching band members and 11 adults join, with selections including Coat of Arms Fantasy for Band Tropical Twilight Do Re Mi and Days of Glory. Gov Otto Kerner Trophy awaits the top group as adjudicators rate performances.
Three U S Air Force planes begin aerial spraying over Dallas to combat an encephalitis epidemic. The effort targets culex mosquitoes carrying St Louis type encephalitis amid 57 probable cases and two deaths. Malathion is dispersed over 500 square miles from 150 feet. Ground spraying continues through August.
Illinois Bell plans Touch Tone phone service in Morris by year end with sets available in December. Direct Distance Dialing will also begin then, giving customers faster station to station long distance calls and access to a nationwide network.
Mario Savio 23, a leader of the 1964 UC Berkeley free speech movement, was rejected for readmission after submitting his application past the August 5 deadline. He had previously staged large campus demonstrations and left to study in England. Dean William B. Fretter notified him by letter on Wednesday.
The 1966 67 tentative budget totaling 794 550 was presented to the Morris Community High School board. The educational fund shows a net increase of 65 215 driven by the new vocational technical program tuition assistance and salary schedule rises. Building transportation retirement and bond funds rise modestly with total receipts listed at 841 766 14. The budget will be open for 30 days in the MCHS office and a special board meeting on Sept 21 will decide adoption.
The Illinois State Fair in Springfield lists Friday August 19 schedule items including senior citizens contests at 10 30 a m in the Illinois building with a 1 30 p m session and a 3 p m stock car race in the grandstand plus a stage show at 8 p m featuring Robert Goulet Carol Lawrence and George Kirby at the grandstand.
