Ceiling on Farm Program Payments Set by House
The House approved a 20000 ceiling on payments to any one person for the federal farm program, 230 to 160, arguing it curbs corporate farming. Backers said the limit would drive big operators away and cripple extension chances beyond 1969 while noting 25 large farms received up to 4.09 million in 1966. The chamber also backed a one year extension beyond 1969, though Sen. Smith warned the Senate would reject the ceiling and end any extension. The basic program supports over 3 billion in annual land retirement payments and runs until the end of 1969.
