Gasoline price jump sparks March CPI surge
The March Consumer Price Index rose 1 percent led by food housing clothing and gasoline with gasoline up 3.8 percent the largest monthly gain in nearly four years. Social Security benefits will rise about 99 percent to about 283 dollars monthly starting July checks. Prices year to date climbed 13 percent and the 12 month rise reached 10.2 percent. Labor data show real earnings fell 0.1 percent in March eroding paychecks by 2 percent over the year. President Carter warned inflation will stay high and prices may rise further.

Social Security to rise $25 July in automatic benefit hike
The average elderly Social Security beneficiary will receive about $25 more per month in July with some up to $50, due to a 9.9 percent automatic cost of living adjustment triggered by the CPI rise. Murder suspect killed after two hostages found dead
SAN DIEGO AP The bodies of a woman and her 4 year old daughter were found in psychologist Richard Townsend’s home. Nigerian exchange student Newman Augustine Osebor was shot and killed by police after a 3 hour standoff on Interstate 8. Townsend survived. Townsend’s former wife had warned police about the doctor patient ties with Osebor. The case involved a bank withdrawal and a hostage ordeal ending with gunfire.

Joliet man George Kent 35 was struck as he allegedly walked toward a car driven by Jack Tucker 31 during a domestic dispute on River Rd south of Seneca. Kent, with a baseball bat, was hospitalized for bruises. no charges against Tucker were filed. Tucker planned to meet the state's attorney.

Illinois River Reaches Flood Stage at Dresden
Rain in the last day pushed the Illinois River higher with Dresden hitting flood stage at 6 45 a m. Morris reported the river at 11 feet and rising at 9 30 a m while Dresden lockmaster Dan Callahan said .82 inches fell in the 24 hours ending 7 a m Wednesday. The river stood six inches above flood stage at 9 40 a m rising 342 feet in 24 hours. Continental Grain in Morris noted the river at 10 feet at 7 a m, up three feet from Wednesday. At Stratton Park 150 feet of road washed away from the season’s first flood. Reconstruction to begin when conditions allow.

Area truckers approve three year contract
Chicago area truck drivers and warehousemen vote to accept a three year pact covering 35 000 workers. Negotiators for Teamsters Local 705 and the independent Chicago Truck Drivers Union reached the settlement after employers dropped flexible starting times. The package provides wage and fringe benefit increases exceeding 30 percent over three years with pay at 11 dollars an hour plus unlimited cost of living increases by April 1 1981.
