State Sen. Jerome Joyce introduces a seven member panel to study nuclear power hazards and spent fuel storage in Illinois. The committee report is due by Sept. 15 1980 with the first due Jan. 15 1980. A public hearing in Morris raised concerns about evacuation plans and transport of nuclear waste into Illinois.

Edward Arambasich appeals pending free on bail
Edward Arambasich 55 of Mallard Lane remains free on bail as he appeals extortion and conspiracy convictions to the U S Supreme Court. The U S Circuit Court in Chicago stayed the mandate and kept him free during the appeal. He was convicted in five trials from 1977 and 1978 of extortion and conspiracy relating to more than 200000 dollars. The road Brown Road Aux Sable Township will be closed April 16 for six weeks to allow a bridge replacement over Valley Run. Arambasich is a Will and Grundy Iron Worker's local business agent. John Arambasich, 58, sentenced to four years, also appeals. no ruling yet.

Veterans groups seek property tax exemptions before county board
Representatives from the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion will appear before the Grundy County Board on Tuesday to seek tax exemptions for their property. Cathleen Schuler for Green Thumb will also speak, as the group pushes jobs for people aged 55 and over. The board will review a regional planning commission meeting on a proposed moratorium on subdivisions in agricultural zones, hear monthly reports, consider three Illinois House bills, vote against the federal acquisition of GE spent nuclear fuel storage on Collins Road, and appoint trustees to four fire protection and sanitary districts.

A fatal shootout on Interstate 57 near Paxton left five dead including Trooper Michael K. McCarter and Donald Lee Vice Sr. Two brothers, suspects in the car theft ring, were killed and two other Lampkin brothers were taken into custody. Fire at NPC plant erupts from line 2 polysynthesis unit
Early today at about 3 45 a m a fire sparked by a minor failure on line 2 of the low density polysynthesis unit at Northern Petrochemical Co on east U S 6. No plant employees were injured and explosions preceded the blaze. Plant manager Richard Wackerman provided the initial explanation.
