Two New Area Grade Schools Are Dedicated

Morris Tax Rate Rises 11 Percent in 1956 City Bills
City of Morris will levy 2.672 dollars per 100 assessed valuation for 1956 personal and real estate taxes, an 11.1 percent increase from 1955. Seriously Hurt in Shooting Accident In Ottawa
Cecil Hackworth, 28, of Marseilles, was seriously injured Sunday afternoon when a .22 caliber pistol he had wrapped in trousers slipped from him and discharged. The bullet lodged in his back as he was entering the tug Bruce Arthur at Ottawa’s Ryburn Memorial hospital where his condition was listed as fair. Hackworth works as a relief pilot on the tug Bruce Arthur for the Mech Ling Barge Co.

U N salvage crews completed the clearance of the Suez Canal by lifting the sunken Egyptian frigate Abukir and towing it to a dumping ground in the Bitter Lakes. Emington Man Killed By Train
Dwight Lewis Schroeder aged 32 of Emington died after his pickup was struck by a northbound Wabash freight train at a crossing south of Emington. The truck was carried about a half mile along the tracks. No signals exist at the crossing. Schroeder's body was sent to Baker Funeral Home in Dwight for incomplete funeral arrangements.
