Weekend thefts and vandalism hit Morris area
Police investigated two thefts and three vandalism incidents over the weekend. A 1966 Chevrolet panel truck belonging to Kevin Nagengast sustained about 60 dollars in damage after vandalism behind the Wagon Wheel on N Division Street. A wallet reportedly containing 15 to 20 dollars and IDs was taken from Kathy Miller at Morris Community High School earlier in the week. A street sign at Buchanan and Liberty Streets was knocked over by a westbound vehicle. A bicycle belonging to Vickie Kenney was stolen from her home, and Shawn Stott reported a slashed bicycle tire at Saratoga Towers.

A separate incident reports Dennis Williams 35 of Channahon charged with driving too fast for conditions after colliding with barricades on Illinois 53 near Mitchell Street. Williams uninjured and no damage estimate listed.

Harold Shields chairman of the Jefferson County Board faces aggravated assault charges after a fight outside Bruford American Legion club left Parker Sargent badly injured. Sargent 63 of Mount Vernon suffered eye and facial injuries and was hospitalized. Shields denied involvement and was released on own recognizance after bond set at 2500 dollars. Police found Shields alone on the parking lot as the incident occurred. Shields failed to win renomination in the March Democratic primary with observers noting Sargents opposed him.
