Madam Rushes Fetes and Early Rush Balls in Philadelphia
In the early fifties the Rush balls matched Vanderbilt and Bradley Martin in social splendor. In her Philadelphia mansion dining room 250 guests sat on cushioned blue damask seats with tables of rare china and gold plate. Servants with blue ribbons guarded doors as peacocks roasted with plumage on display delighted guests. The hostess said refined young men and well-dressed, lively women, though without money, were indispensable, with premier music and the world’s finest supper.
