Iowa a Promised Land For Immigrants

In 1870 the Iowa Board of Immigration hired A R Fulton to craft a pamphlet inviting newcomers to the state. A $5,000 edition in English spread among immigrants, with 20,000 foreign language copies for Germany, Holland, Denmark, and Sweden. Many Scandinavian editions were reportedly burned in the Chicago fire. Fulton praised Iowa as uniformly flat with a perfect drainage system and estimated nine tenths of the land suitable for settlement.
