Opening Day Enrollments Rise as School Dims Return

On opening day 297 students enrolled with 148 in Freshman class and 149 in Sophomore through eighth grades. Lunch signups reached 72, with officials predicting a larger lunch program this year. Dismissal times vary by grade, and Friday follows an early release for the Fall Festival.

The August meeting of the Iconium Methodist church Women’s Society Circle was held Thursday afternoon. Quilting was the activity led by Grace Whitehead with Ruth McCord Ide Christy and Mrs Edwards assisting. Refreshments were served by Madge and Thelma Calhoun. Mrs E F Oehler was taken to St Joseph hospital in Centerville for treatment. Her daughter Mrs Kenneth Barghahn and family of Knoxville visited the Oehler home over Sunday and Monday.

Fall baseball schedule announced by Kuperschmid

Mr and Mrs Mearl Walter announce the engagement of their daughter Annabelle to John M Wilson son of Mr and Mrs Frank Wilson Annabelle a Moravia high school graduate 1949 and John a Moravia high school graduate 1948 He works on the family farm and Miss Walter is employed at Centerville Bank No wedding plans have been announced.

Library Plans Rest Room During Festival

Library board met Saturday evening at the reading room to plan transforming the reading room into a rest room for the festival. Mrs. Woodward presided, with Mrs. McCrory in charge of visitors registering for seats. The book committee selected new public readings and children’s books loaned for summer will return to the traveling library in Des Moines this week.

Taylor Aid Meeting Scheduled for September 20

The Taylor Aid group moves its meeting to September 20 from September 13. Miss Adelena Sampson will attend and officers for the coming year will be elected. A home economist program debuts, with Mrs. Theo Miller hosting a cooperative dinner, as Fall Festival renews subscriptions to the Union.

Grace Methodist Church Moravia announces Sunday School at 16:00 a m and Morning Worship at 11:00 a m. All Stars Continue On Winning Streak

Moravia All Stars beat Blakesburg in a return game at Blakesburg 22 to 9 after a 9-9 tie through seven. Dick Johnson pitched seven innings, Bud McDanel finished in the eighth as Moravia exploded with 13 runs in the eighth and seven in the first. Delmar Dowd pitched for Blakesburg with Dale Laws catching. Moravia also defeated Mystic 8 to 7 at Mystic behind McDanel’s nine-hit effort with McDanel and Seddon credited in the battery for Mystic. Upcoming games include Mystic at home Wednesday, Unionville Friday, and Centerville Eagles next Thursday.

Mission Band Meets With Condra Sisters

The Evanelical United Brethren church children's mission band met Monday afternoon with Margaret and Mary Ellen Condra. Mrs. Fred Hammond and Mrs. Harold Mason led the Jesson study on Japan about The Goat from Americas. Ronald Van Zante led games after business. William Palmer son of Mr and Mrs Earl Palmer Sr of Rochester Michigan nephew of George Claude and Sadie Palmer of Moravia flew to an airport near Rochester to visit his parents before returning to work at Long Beach California He flew a private plane loaned to him for his vacation trip home No storms no accidents nothing to mar perfect travel in the skyways Every time he stopped at an airport to rest and eat or take on fuel a checkback was made He was employed as a deputy sheriff at the Douglas Aircraft plant in Long Beach He was once with the Michigan State Police and during the war served with the medical corps at Anchorage and the Aleutian Islands On his trip over William landed in New Mexico Texas Kansas Burlington Iowa and Joliet Ti for rest eats and fuel

Petey Dicks Completes U S Navy Basic Training

Richard Dicks son of Mr and Mrs Truxton Dicks completed basic training in the U S Navy at San Diego on August 28. Eighty four boys in his company left for ships. six, including Petey, had not yet received orders. He then learned he would go to Treasure Island Naval Base by plane for forty two weeks of electronics schooling. Moravia High School class of 1950 graduate enlisted January 14 and began training June 1.
