On opening day 297 students enrolled with 148 in Freshman class and 149 in Sophomore through eighth grades. Lunch signups reached 72, with officials predicting a larger lunch program this year. Dismissal times vary by grade, and Friday follows an early release for the Fall Festival.
The August meeting of the Iconium Methodist church Women’s Society Circle was held Thursday afternoon. Quilting was the activity led by Grace Whitehead with Ruth McCord Ide Christy and Mrs Edwards assisting. Refreshments were served by Madge and Thelma Calhoun. Attendees included Dr and Mrs Edwards Madge Calhoun Thelma Calhoun Shirley and Leon Florence Dicks Stella Argo Betty Estluck Kenny Sybie Argo Don and Hazel Hellyer Carrie Turner Nellie Thompson Ruth McCord Grace Whitehead Sandra Dorothy Calhoun Richard Leta Haver Icle Christy Maude Turner and others.
Mr and Mrs QO A Burton their son John and Mrs Frank Neff return from visits in Battle Creek Michigan Bellevue and Marshall Michigan Also met Burt Neff family in Bellevue visited Jean Neff Sueann in Battle Creek and relatives in Muscatine Iowa and Rockford Minnesota En route they toured Edison Institute in Dearborn Belle Isle Detroit and Des Moines state fair stop Margaret Burton joined at the O A Burton home for a weekend visit with relatives in attendance.
Mrs John Card entertained a group of girls Friday afternoon for LaVonne Cards tenth birthday. Contests and games provided entertainment. Ice cream angel food cake nuts mints cookies and koolache were served to the guests.
Mrs E F Oehler was taken to St Joseph hospital in Centerville for treatment. Her daughter Mrs Kenneth Barghahn and family of Knoxville visited the Oehler home over Sunday and Monday.
Coach Kuperschmid reports fall baseball practice underway and the team shaping up. Key games: Attica here Friday Sept 8, Udell here Sept 12, Levilla here Sept 15, Moulton there Sept 16, Udell there Sept 27. Sectional tournament set for Sept 21 23 25 with location TBD.
The annual Glick reunion gathered sixty relatives Sunday at Mrs. Riley Callen s home with a noon basket dinner on the lawn. Attending were numerous Glicks and related families from Rockford Keosauqua Des Moines Oskaloosa Yu lia LaPorte City Plano Centerville Albia Trenton and nearby areas.
Mr and Mrs W N Miller celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary with greetings and cards from friends. In the afternoon neighbors Mrs D L Strunk and Mrs Gerald Burton brought an anniversary cake and homemade ice cream. Also present were Mr Ted Campbell and Mrs Clifford Caster.
Plate lunches are offered by the W S C S of the Methodist church. Meals will be served Thursday at noon and evening, with dinners available Saturday at noon. Proceeds support church activities.
Mr and Mrs Mearl Walter announce the engagement of their daughter Annabelle to John M Wilson son of Mr and Mrs Frank Wilson Annabelle a Moravia high school graduate 1949 and John a Moravia high school graduate 1948 He works on the family farm and Miss Walter is employed at Centerville Bank No wedding plans have been announced.
Library board met Saturday evening at the reading room to plan transforming the reading room into a rest room for the festival. Mrs. Woodward presided, with Mrs. McCrory in charge of visitors registering for seats. The book committee selected new public readings and children’s books loaned for summer will return to the traveling library in Des Moines this week.
The Taylor Aid group moves its meeting to September 20 from September 13. Miss Adelena Sampson will attend and officers for the coming year will be elected. A home economist program debuts, with Mrs. Theo Miller hosting a cooperative dinner, as Fall Festival renews subscriptions to the Union.
Several churches announce service times and Sunday school. Caviche United Brethren Church led by Pastor Leo Wilson and Harold Mason offers 10:00 a.m. Sunday School and 10:50 a.m. worship with a sermon titled A Good Word for The Pharisee. Fay Garner Baptist Church lists 1:30 p.m. Sunday School and 9:30 p.m. worship, with all welcome. Church of the Nazarene FP led by A Hahn has 10:00 a.m. Sunday School, 11:00 a.m. morning worship, 7:30 p.m. young people, 8:00 p.m. evening worship, and 7:30 p.m. junior meeting. Thursday prayer meeting at 8:00 p.m.
Grace Methodist Church Moravia announces Sunday School at 16:00 a m and Morning Worship at 11:00 a m. The regular family night is set for Wednesday evening September 1 with Teachers of the public school as guests and dinner at 6:30. The children's choir meets after school September 15 for practice. Warnelta McConnell is minister at Wesley Methodist Church with Church School at 9:45 a m and Morning Worship at 10:30 a m.
The Moravia Church of Christ invites members and visitors to Bible school at 10:00 a.m. with Eugene McCrory as superintendent, Morning Worship at 11:00 a.m., and Bible Study at 8:00 p.m. Mrs. Ezra Coltrain joined last Sunday. A preaching rally drew many from Moravia in Cincinnati. Evangelistic service is planned each Wednesday at 8:00 p.m. All are welcome.
The church urges plan to study God's word and worship with neighbors. Sunday school starts at 10:00 a m and public worship at 11:00 a m. Sermon topic is What Jesus Said About Missions. A Moravian Union subscription is suggested as a welcome gift.
Moravia All Stars beat Blakesburg in a return game at Blakesburg 22 to 9 after a 9-9 tie through seven. Dick Johnson pitched seven innings, Bud McDanel finished in the eighth as Moravia exploded with 13 runs in the eighth and seven in the first. Delmar Dowd pitched for Blakesburg with Dale Laws catching. Moravia also defeated Mystic 8 to 7 at Mystic behind McDanel’s nine-hit effort with McDanel and Seddon credited in the battery for Mystic. Upcoming games include Mystic at home Wednesday, Unionville Friday, and Centerville Eagles next Thursday.
The Evanelical United Brethren church children's mission band met Monday afternoon with Margaret and Mary Ellen Condra. Mrs. Fred Hammond and Mrs. Harold Mason led the Jesson study on Japan about The Goat from Americas. Ronald Van Zante led games after business. Hostesses, helped by Mrs. Kenneth Condra, served refreshments. The group is preparing a playlet for a Sunday church presentation.
William Palmer son of Mr and Mrs Earl Palmer Sr of Rochester Michigan nephew of George Claude and Sadie Palmer of Moravia flew to an airport near Rochester to visit his parents before returning to work at Long Beach California He flew a private plane loaned to him for his vacation trip home No storms no accidents nothing to mar perfect travel in the skyways Every time he stopped at an airport to rest and eat or take on fuel a checkback was made He was employed as a deputy sheriff at the Douglas Aircraft plant in Long Beach He was once with the Michigan State Police and during the war served with the medical corps at Anchorage and the Aleutian Islands On his trip over William landed in New Mexico Texas Kansas Burlington Iowa and Joliet Ti for rest eats and fuel
Moravia’s 1950 festival hearkens to 1909 events with horse and colt exhibits, livestock divisions, and a baby show. Read as a nostalgia piece on long-running fair traditions, noting premium listings, officers, and standout winners including prettiest dog, smallest baby, and heaviest babies.
The 1950 Fall Festival is ready with last minute preparations. Community booths and displays set up including bakery goods flowers and fruits. Poultry entries include Gold Neck Layers with hybrids planned for the premium list. Thursday entry day and R E A day feature entertainment and meetings. Friday Farm Bureau runs programs and parade. Saturday morning music children’s parade horse pulling contest and a big band and Randolph Players finale.
Booster club meets Friday evening to discuss Milwaukee railroad plans to suspend trains 8 and 3 between Davenport and Kansas City via Moravia. Charles Gardner leads Ottumwa Chamber delegation urging attendance at Commerce Commission hearing in Ottumwa next Wednesday. Blakesburg business leaders attend as part of the gathering. Legion Auxiliary serves dinner.
Richard Dicks son of Mr and Mrs Truxton Dicks completed basic training in the U S Navy at San Diego on August 28. Eighty four boys in his company left for ships. six, including Petey, had not yet received orders. He then learned he would go to Treasure Island Naval Base by plane for forty two weeks of electronics schooling. Moravia High School class of 1950 graduate enlisted January 14 and began training June 1.
