A garbled but era tone note discusses rising corporate taxes, profits paid to stockholders, and a predicted tax rise to half of earnings. It lists federal chauffeur use, lunch costs for students, arms and paint purchases by the army, and humorous bear encounter tales from Moravia with a bear drawing tourists and film proof. It ends with a subscriber letter offering a yearly check.
A radio remark criticized as nonsensical proposes a 200 group air force to deter Russians. The speaker warns against equating plane building with peace, comparing it to treating poison as health. The note questions the logic and cost estimates of such a plan.
A poem by Robert Charles Gladfelder in Korea depicts life in the hills and ditch duty five thousand miles from home. It contrasts meager pay, harsh conditions, and weather with nostalgic longing, defense of the land, and the idea of returning to forgotten families.
A Moravia centennial tribute celebrates local heritage and unity. The letter honors past residents including Mrs. Blumenstock and Floyd Stevens, recalls Civil War and Armistice Day memories, and emphasizes patriotism, strong schools, and community support for teachers and gospel work.
Attendance at the state fair included Clarence Whitehead and family and several Hellyers and Jennningss. Charles Jennings spent time in Des Moines for the fair and visiting relatives. The Blue Front school begins August 27 with Hazel Hellyer. Families visited in Bloomfield Woodhull and with Harrison Ankeny relatives over the weekend.
Perry and Karol Ant Hellyer attended events at the Dell Hellyer home while George Hellyer visited. Sympathy extended to the families of Mrs Mary Zimmers and Mrs Ed Turner. Local residents attended two funeral services. Mr and Mrs John Petersen visited relatives in the north town. Delbert Calhoun’s family hosted Friday evening guests and Dell Hellyer and Hazel were seen at Bert Rinehart’s home.
