Arthur McKern son of Clyde McKern of Centerville enlisted in the United States navy and left Centerville for training on a Wednesday night in August. He is well known in Moravia and is expected to receive preliminary training at Great Lakes Illinois.
Eugene Wilcox Jr son of Mia Ralph McDonough of Moravia received his wings and a second lieutenant commission in the United States Army Air Corps. He trained at Luke Field Phoenix Arizona and was transferred to Spokane Washington. Mrs Charles Palmer Gainsville Fla and Mrs Lula R Clark Des Moines noted in the accompanying family record. Mrs Easter past He Horton in the Gitliland home honor of Mrs Palmer who departed for her home Sunday night.

U B Church plans a September 9 dinner serving meat loaf, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, cole slaw, tomatoes, baked apples, lime beans, bread and butter with coffee. Community updates mention Mrs Curtis Burton’s return from Sidney and Melcher wedding events, Crawley reunion at Moravia park, and various local visits including Knoxville school work start and hospital stays.
Leland Doddea left with his aunt Mrs R R Pennington for Lincoln Nebraska after a summer with his aunt and uncle. Ellajean Funkhouser spent the weekend in Chicago with relatives. Joan Funkhouser returned home after a monthlong visit. Wesley Haines family and Mrs Clara Haines of Hot Springs South Carolina, along with Nellie Haines of Red Oak, are visiting Fred and Roscoe Argo. Nellie Haines was born and raised in Moravia.
A garbled OCR note lists band program items and events including a March titled Festival Overture, a ball at Jahe Park, and a Darktown Strollers Ball. It references marches, hymns, and the Star Spangled Banner, with names like Yellen and Pete, amid scattered phrases about tunes and a cadence of performances for an upcoming concert season.
Earnest A Garner 44, son of Mr and Mrs Charles Garner Moravia, has been advanced from seaman second class to baker third class. He has served nearly a year at the United States naval training station at Great Lakes Illinois, where he is assigned to a station galley since enlisting in the naval reserve last October.
Funeral services were held in Perryman chapel for J. Lauren Haines a Burlington Zephyr retiree of 46 years born December 14 1877 in Osceola who died Friday at his Red Oak home. He served as fireman then engineer and moved from Creston to Red Oak in 1919. He is survived by his wife Nellie Argo two sons foster son and two grandchildren plus a sister. He was a Spanish American War militia member who failed the army physical.
Moravia will host its 87th Fall Festival September 10 to 12 with a new premium division offering three prizes for farm exhibits. Entries for livestock and other events are due by evening and the Moravia high school band will perform, while a pet parade and Dixie Trail musical program are planned. A notable speaker is sought for Saturday, with concerts at 1:90 p.m. and 8 p.m. and additional shows at 2 and 8 p.m.
Lloyd Clark II was elected president of the Callen reunion for the coming year at the 19th annual gathering held after a program at the city park in Moravia. Other officers elected were W. C. Coulson as vice president Vera Moore as secretary and Bernice Coulson as treasurer. A noon dinner followed with many Callen family members and friends from Albia Moravia Oskaloosa Moulton Winfield Cheyenne Lacona and Plano attending.
The Methodist aid will serve dinner on Friday and Saturday at the Pal Festival. Menu includes fried chicken roast beef creamy noodles mashed potatoes or sweet potatoes baked apples and spice cake. Prices and exact times are not fully legible in the copy.
Mrs. Harley Tisue hosted a dinner Sunday honoring Mrs. Hugh McFatridge and Harley Tisue whose birthdays fell on August 24 and August 90. Attending were Mr. and Mrs. Hugh McFatridge, Mr. and Mrs. J Bickford, W. J. Lemaster, and the Harley Tisue family.
Laura Tollenaar of Reno Nevada spent Monday and Tuesday with her sister in Alliance Nebraska and with family. Lawrence a Bula returned home from Alliance, Nebraska. Seas has been employed.
Hiatt Brown Coffin and Foster reunions are planned in Centerville Moravia and surrounding areas. Dates span September 6 8 and 18 with venues including Centerville city park and Moravia city park.
John RB Lovell formerly of Ottumwa, now in the United States army intelligence department in Washington, D C, has been promoted from major to lieutenant colonel. He returned to this country in June after serving as a military attaché in the American embassy in Germany. He recently visited his relative Mrs. Charlea Coffin in July and expects to be sent overseas soon for active duty.
Church services at Caurene and Wesley Chapel list morning worship at 10 00 am and 11 00 am with Sunday school and fellowship hours. Evening worship at 7 00 pm and devotional hour at 7 00 pm. Meetings include M Y F cabinet and official board in church basement, 8 00 pm. Wesley Chapel notes W S C S meets Thursday with hostess Mia Ernest Hiatt. Upper Room available anytime.

Obituary notice for Mrs Fanny Keemer of Dayton notes Moravia roots and survivors. Brevet details include Alvin Donahoe visiting from Great Lakes and Robert Main enlisting in the coast guard.
Urpe Mya and Don, listed as visitors this year, traveled with their son Charles and his family to Iowa City before returning home. Mrs Avia Kurteweil and Dickie and Mary traveled to Des Moines on Monday and departed Tuesday for San Francisco where they plan to settle.
Moravia high school enrollment nears a peak at 194 today per superintendent Iliam H. Young. Grade school enrollment totals 100, with all faculty positions filled and classes underway. Bus routes east and west face late delivery, private cars will assist. Administrative duties shift to superintendent, with Miss Frances L. Copeland joining as principal. New hires include LaVon Long in social science and Gordon R. Speers as high school coach. Enrollment by class: 55 freshmen, 89 sophomores, 51 juniors, 49 seniors. grade school breakdown listed.
Funeral services were held for Mrs Amanda Creech 70 at United Brethren church Moravia. She died at home Monday after a stroke in August and failing health. Survivors include husband W R Creech three children two step daughters seven grandchildren two great grandchildren seven brothers and two sisters. Burial followed at Eaton Cemetery Unionville.
Glen LeRoy Lockman of near Moravia enlisted in the United States Army and left for active duty reporting to Fort Leavenworth. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Lockman.
Dr and Mrs W R Davis of Nacogdoches Texas are in Moravia visiting their son Wayne P Davis editor of the Moravia Union. Dr Davis is director of the education department at Stephen F Austin State Teacher College in Nacogdoches and they will stay about a week.
Moraine’s American Legion auxiliary unit plans a home talent show Thursday night September 8 at 8 p m in the high school auditorium. Nearby towns invited to participate. Interested participants should contact Mrs Bette Day promptly.
Chariton township Farm Bureau plans a meeting at the Iconium Methodist church on Wednesday at 8 pm with lunch served by the ladies aid and a dinner at 6:30. Glen Birlingmair, county agent, announces the schedule.
The Coulson family honored 48 veterans and departed members at the 16th annual Coulson reunion held August 27 at Centerville city park. The program included memorials, salutes to flags, officer elections for 1948, musical selections by Louise and Doris Rouse and Ruby Johnson, hymns, and talks by community members.
