A local public notice describes a practice air raid alert on the first day of the Fall Festival, September ninth. Traffic will stop for about 20 minutes as wardens and auxiliary police guide civilians, with church bells signaling the drill and civilians urged to stay calm and cooperative.
Fifty one rams and four ewes sold at Monroe county purebred sale in Albia. Top price of 60 dollars for a Hampshire ram bid by Kenneth Calhoun for a Green City Missouri consignor. Also top Shropshire ram at 60 and Poland China boar at 388 paid by Frank Zike. Other hogs sold include fall Berkshire boat at 77 and Chester White at 41. Top Hampshire boar from James W Foster herd sold for 52.
Dr W Frank Lister of Ottumwa district superintendent officiated the first quarterly Moravia and Wesley Chapel Methodist churches conference. He preached at 8 p m with members from Moravia and guests from Iconium present. Rev E L Pullman serves Moravia charge.
Mr and Mrs Charles Endsley of Big Sandy Montana are expected in Moravia for the Fall Festival and members of the Methodist Class Nine plan a picnic supper at the home of teacher emeritus G T Harn. The date will be announced next week and participants should bring covered dish sandwiches and table service.
Miss Annie Brain entertained at her Moravia home on August 20 for welfare office friends from Centerville. The evening featured piano and singing with guests including Mr. and Mrs. Olson, Myra Bair, Esther Deahl, Dorothy Anderson, Janet Cathcart, Bessie Harvey, and Helen Mozena.
Moravia high school enrollment stands at 166 says superintendent William B. Searcuiff. Miss Mildred H. Breen of Chicago has been hired to teach commercial subjects, bringing 13 years of Chicago business college experience and five years of high school teaching. She will arrive Thursday and begin classes Friday.
Will Blumer was elected president of the Blumer reunion held Sunday in Moravia park. Other officers named were Doris Burns, secretary, and Mildred Blumer, treasurer. The next gathering is set for Lake Wapello the last Sunday in August, 1944, with many Blumer family members and visitors in attendance.
At the churches Bible School at 10 00 a m with Winnie DuVall as superintendent Communion Service at 10 50 a m and a sermon at 11 00 a m by Rev J W Hastie in the morning service.
The United Brethren G. M Talbott church announces a 10:00 a.m. church school led by Carl VanZante, a 10:50 a.m. worship service, and an 8:00 p.m. evening service. The W.M.B. will meet with Mrs. E. G. Hawk Friday afternoon.
Mrs. Mary Hoskinson received handkerchiefs and greetings on her birthday at a noon luncheon hosted by the ladies aid. Guests included Miss Lucy Dodge and Mrs. Birdie Main among others, with quilting and visiting planned for the day.
Hon Karl M LeCompte from this district addressed the county meeting of the Women’s Society of Christian Service of the Methodist church in Centerville Tuesday. Moravian attendees included Mrs W L Palmer Mrs Burton Tarr Mrs D E Bishop Mrs C M McFatridge Mrs Chester Bro shar Mrs Howard Smith Mrs W L Hoover Mrs W B Searcliff and the Rev and Mrs E L Pullman.
Mrs William Laws has kept a low profile this past week in her local community, with no public appearances or notable events reported. Neighbors note steady routine and absence of any major disturbances.
The report notes Clarence Caster and his brother Clifford Caster visiting parents Mr and Mrs BE Caster while Clifford remains in New Guinea. Harold Boyer is with a mountain infantry detachment in the Aleutians and Edwin Spencer, son of Mr and Mrs Paul Spencer of Moravia, is stated to be safe in Australia after five weeks. Max Stover, a bombardier, arrived at Calvert New Mexico to visit his wife’s parents Mr and Mrs Gus Tisue.
The Saturday concert closes the season with well known marches such as Footlifter El Capitan Our Director Fairest Of The Fair Fighting Irish Washington Post General Douglas MacArthur and Three Blind Mice. A Night Club Floor Show version adds a tap toe apache routine and military drill. The Moravia program also offers Band Junior Band orchestra vocal and beginner lessons with contact to Mrs. Cleveland.
James Sawyer of Moravia displayed the reserve Jersey heifer amid strong competition from Keith and Elton Adams of Moulton who presented the grand champion two year old. Blue ribbons led a field of Jersey calves brown Swiss and Hereford entries. Market pigs led by Jimmie and Junky Siddles crossed cross bred litters selling at 14.50 per hundred with junior Sidles naming the top individual. Poultry entries earned blue ribbons for Alta Jane Phillips Udell and Louise Wahl Mystic.
William Max Hiner, recently inducted into the army and on furlough, was honored with a cooperative dinner at his parents Mr. and Mrs. Lew Hiner. Attendees included numerous relatives such as Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Fostex, Mr. and Mrs. Ted Broshar and sons, and others listing multiple Hiner family members and friends.
Mrs J D Minnes underwent a major operation at St Marys Hospital in Rochester Minnesota last week and is recovering as well as can be expected at present. She was taken to the hospital for observation and treatment a short time earlier.
Miss Jean Shirley Albert daughter of Mr and Mrs James Albert of Arlington Virginia and granddaughter of Moravia New York became the bride of Chief Petty Officer Rex W Firkins USNR son of Mr and Mrs George Firkins of Moravia at Union Methodist church Washington August 9 The Rev Harry P Baker Arlington Forest Methodist church officiated The couple will reside in Washington with Mr Firkins on duty at the fleet post office San Francisco and Mrs Firkins employed in Washington until his return
Mrs. Smith Tharp, chair of rural school exhibits for the Fall Festival, announced today that 10 teachers must enter their displays by 10 p.m. Friday, Sept. 10, at the Community Building in Moravia. She said the exhibits will receive generous space this year to attract more attention.
Glen M Garrett and his sons scored at the Monroe County Purebred Sire show in Albia with a grand champion Guernsey cow, reserve 4 H heifer, and multiple first places for a two year old heifer and calves. The prize cow began as Kugen’s 4-H heifer in 1939 and produced four heifer calves in a row. The Garretts plan to display their winners at the Cattle Congress in Waterloo this weekend.
Sunday marked the 57th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. C Callen of Moravia. The Callen reunion at Mora via park featured a basket dinner, songs and recitations led by Elsie Callen. Officers were reelected: Lloyd Clark president, Wincil Coulson VP, Mildred Moore secretary, Wincil Coulson treasurer. Attendees included numerous Callen relatives from Albia to Oskaloosa and Centerville, plus a short service honoring Callen family members in the armed forces.
The Espy reunion will be held September 6 at Centerville Park. The Foster reunion meets Sunday September 5, 1943, also at Centerville Park. The Hiatt reunion gathers Sunday September 6 in Juda at Centerville Park.
Moravia festival preparations proceed with official approval of a flower project to honor local service men on September 10. Ted Gehler will MC the presentation to the festival association, town, and armed forces. A large program slate includes Boy Scout Troop 40, a Shetland pony colt class, and the opening ceremony featuring 20 stars on the community service flag.
Forty four members of the Coulman family met in Centerville city park on Sunday August 26 to honor 17 relatives serving in the U S armed forces. The reunion set for the fourth Thursday in August 1944 next year. Officers and a program by family members followed a chorus and prayers.
