Turkey Prices Favor Consumers This Year
Turkey prices this fall likely please households preparing Thanksgiving feasts while producers see less favorable terms. U S outputs around 20 million turkeys this year vs 15 million last year, per A D Oderkirk of Town State College. Despite higher production, lighter weights and shifted flock sizes may soften pounds sold and keep market prices steady or lower in early fall. Frank Swaim was in Centerville Monday.

All Hybrid Seed Corn Not Superior Yielding
Towa farmers should not assume all hybrids outperform open pollinated varieties. Tests show some hybrid strains yield far worse, with gaps up to 26 to 35 bushels per acre. Only buy hybrid seed from strictly inspected fields under Iowa Agricultural Experiment Association oversight.

Lamb Feeding Requires Skill To Show Profit
Farmers weigh the profit question in feeder lambs as high feed costs and prices bite. F LaGrange of Iowa State College notes optimal weights 55-70 pounds for feeders and 85-96 pounds for market, stressing alert healthy lambs with strong hindquarters. Corn fields alone fail. add legume hay or protein supplements, with gradual start and dry feed.

Feeding Lambs on Corn and Oats Rations
The guide notes lambs gain best on corn or barley rather than oats, which fatten slower but are safe due to hulls. Lambs may receive unlimited hay from the start, and if legume hay is not used, add protein supplements such as soybeans, linseed meal, or cottonseed meal at one part supplement to seven parts grain, plus minerals.
