Preparing the Laying Flock for Winter Months
Winter is near and many farmers lack proper housing for their flocks. Overscrowding remains tempting but floor space links to egg production. most flocks perform better with three square feet per bird or more. Plan to increase space if minimums fall short and adjust to building size. Labor needs have risen since 1940 with labor saving devices like automatic waterers bins and improved nests. Extension offices offer plans for laying house equipment. Production rose from 156 eggs per hen in 1940 to 207 in 1948, a one third gain, guiding decisions for flock owners.
