River Navigation Branded Old Scheme in Des Moines Region

Public interest efforts to fund Des Moines River navigation trace back to 1868 with Albert Miller Lea and motifs of steamboat routes to Racoon Fork. Early reports cite Fremont 1841 on navigability, and vessels like Science and Agatha reaching Keosauqua and Racoon Fork. The 1846 federal law spurred dam and lock plans to Fort Des Moines, but land litigation, floods, and funding shortfalls doomed the project, a case noted by Dr. J. A. Swisher in The Palimpsest.
