Grain moisture discounts rise across Iowa elevators
Iowa grain elevators post higher moisture discounts this fall, says ISU economist Bob Wisner. Discounts reflect drying costs and shrinkage, with penalties for selling wet corn when drying capacity is tight. A typical scheme taxes moisture above 15.5 percent at 2 percent per point, plus a 6.5 cent total drying cost and shrinkage about 12.5 percent for 10 points moisture removal. A flat 4 cent per point and an alternative shrinkage method are also mentioned. Farmers should compute costs and potential returns given local rates and corn price.

Living History Farms seeks funds to finish Iowa project
Dr. Murray of the Dallas County Farm Bureau notes more than 900000 in donations over five years from individuals and businesses in Central Iowa. The foundation holds land valued near two million with a 321000 loan. He says Iowa farmers should be first asked to contribute, not a major outside foundation.
