Let Corn Dry In Fields This Fall
Farmers delaying harvest to let corn dry in the field aim to reduce soft corn problems. One field drying day equals ten dry days in the crib, says C H Van Vlack, extension engineer at Iowa State College. Drying is best in October. corn dries in warm fall weather and not much in winter. Check moisture content before cribbing. aim for 20 percent moisture when cribbed. Take at least 20 ears from varied spots, sample with a screwdriver, mix, seal, and test at the elevator. Ear corn with 20 to 25 percent moisture can be cribbed if cribs are ventilated and husks clean. Corn at 25 to 30 percent moisture should wait for cold weather and crib ventilators used. Corn above 30 percent should be fed early. Maximum crib widths are 6 to 7 feet in the north.
