CHECK HAZARDS DURING FIRE PREVENTION WEEK

National Fire Prevention Week kicks off Oct 9, highlighting fire hazard prevention for Iowa towns and farms. Norval Wardle of Iowa State College notes 61 Iowa fire deaths last year, an 8 year-low, though toll remains high. He cites 75 million dollars in losses over the past decade and urges home and farm hazard safeguards, safer storage of gasoline and kerosene, and ongoing prevention programs led by schools and organizations.

Progressive Club Meeting With Mrs Theo Miller

The Progressive club held its first fall meeting Friday evening with Mrs. Theo Miller. Prizes in bridge went to Mrs. Lester Brain Mrs. Cecil Schrodt and Mrs. Karl Tuttle. Members of the E T C club met Friday afternoon at the Herald Hoff mans home. Mrs Hoffman led the entertainment and a door prize was won by Mrs Lester Smalth. Moravia Band Wins Rating at Lancaster Festival

Moravia high school marching band earned a second place rating and $50 at the Lancaster Mo band festival. Band director Robert Sloan led the group with drum majorette Mary Ellen Condra. Bloomfield won first place, Novinger took third, and Moulton placed fourth.

Garden Club Meets With Mabel Hawk

The Moravia Garden club met Sept 28 at the home of Mabel Hawk. A combined August and September agenda due to illness included a prayer, a poem by Mrs. Hawk, a garden jingle by 23 members, and nominations for October officers. Members will donate used flower magazines to Veterans Hospital, and a program covered winter arrangements, fruit origins, herbs, and gardening tips.

Eva Main 81 Dies After Stroke at Centerville Nursing Home

Eva Main 81 died Tuesday evening at 8 30 at Phillips nursing home Centerville after a stroke. She had been in frail health for years and was born Evaline Porter Main on June 16, 1874. Her husband Charley Main preceded her in death in 1935, and she leaves two daughters and two stepsons plus a stepson and a step-daughter. Funeral plans await arrival of her son from Kansas City.

Mrs Chris Bogert aged 60 died Sunday at Monroe County hospital after a stroke a week earlier. Funeral services were held Wednesday with interment at Main Station Fairview cemetery. Rev Horace Schaffner officiated. She was born September 19 1895 near Darby Iowa and died October 2 1955 in Albia Iowa. She married Chris Bogert January 2 1915 at Centerville Iowa. Survived by her husband three brothers Loren Cedar Rapids Lew Oakdale and Jess who lived with them. numerous relatives and friends.

F.F.A Initiation Held in Moravia Tuesday Evening

A Moravia FFA special meeting began at 7:00 pm Tuesday to initiate green hands as chapter farmers. Twelve green hands promoted, thirteen members initiated as green hands, plus fifteen Moulton boys joined as green hands for a new chapter. National FFA contest awards announced for 1955 include 17 superior and 21 standard awards among 238 chapters. Moravia earned a standard award with Gerald Luse as reporter.

Joellen Veach Breaks Right Arm in Fall

Four year old Joellen Veach daughter of Mr and Mrs Richard Veach fractured the right arm Sunday afternoon. While playing in the yard with two companions she fell injuring both bones just above the wrist. Taken to Monroe county hospital at Albia the arm was x rayed set and cast. She recuperates at home.

SARGENT'S SOFTBALL GIRLS IN FINALS

Coach Gilbert Sargent's girls softball team Iron Cantril paused in Moravia for lunch en route from Attica tourney victory. They beat Mingo 8-1 at Attica for their 10th straight win and will face Grand Mound in the final when weather permits. This is the first sanctioned girls softball season in the state.

Unionville Couple Weds in Methodist Ceremony

Donna West and Paul Spencer Jr entwined in a double ring wedding at Unionville Methodist Church on Sunday. The service at 2 pm featured Pink carnations and music by Jewel Roberts of Blakesburg. Bride wore a winter white suit with navy accents. groom is son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Spencer Sr. of Moravia. After a short wedding trip they will reside at 214 Hill Ave Ottumwa. Donna West, a Udell high school graduate, works at John Morrell & Co. Spencer, a Moravia HS graduate, served three years in the Army and will work in Ottumwa.

The Moravia Assembly of Rainbow Girls traveled to Chariton Tuesday evening to perform initiation work for the Chariton chapter of Eastern Stars.
