Country Fair at 4-H Fairgrounds Oct 4

Monroe County Hospital Auxiliary hosts Country Fair at the 4-H fairgrounds on Thursday Oct 4 with dinner 5 to 7 pm. Auction begins 6 30 pm, carnival and booths selling fresh country produce, plus a dance by the Joe Denny band. Proceeds support a hospital snack bar and a TV set for patients.

The American Legion Auxiliary county convention will be held Wednesday October 10 in Moulton Iowa. Dinner will be served at 6 30 p m. Anyone who plans to go is asked to contact Margaret Brooks or Mary Ann Sloan not later than noon on Monday October 9.

Welcoming Service Held for Nazarene Pastor

The Church of the Nazarene hosted a welcoming service Sunday at 2 30 pm led by supply pastor Rev A O Weiss. Representatives from Local Ministerial Alliance Center ville Nazarene Albion Nazarene and Knoxville Nazarene attended. The Smiths expressed happiness with the reception and sense of belonging here.

Dinner honors birthday anniversary in Lone Rock and Des Moines

Mr and Mrs Kenneth Condra hosted a Sunday dinner honoring their son Wendell of Lone Rock born September 26 and daughter Margaret of Des Moines born October 3. Guests included Marlon Condra and daughter Antonette Wayne Fisher of Blakesburg and Mary Ellen and Minnie Ann. Wendell teaches at Lane Rock schools.

The Past Matrons club met Tuesday evening at the home of Mrs. C A Turner with Mrs. Frances Burton as assisting hostess. A social evening included watching two TV shows and each person singing the songs on her napkin before refreshments of ice cream cake dessert and coffee.

Reception Held for Rev Smith Family at Nazarene Parsonage

Members of the Church of the Nazarene and friends held a reception and pounding for Rev and Mrs H L Smith and their children at the Nazarene parsonage Tuesday evening. The event began with a hymn sing and prayer by Mrs Smith, followed by social time and refreshments of pie and coffee.

Moravia FFA judging team wins at Waterloo Dairy Congress

Moravia high school FFA judging team members David West Tom Pettibone and Carl Rousé with John Murdy as alternate earned a silver emblem in dairy cow and dairy heifer judging plus management and pedigree problems at the Waterloo Dairy Cattle Congress. The group joined 53 teams earning silver emblems and attended a banquet hosted by John Deere & Co. where all four boys and their instructor Bernie Valentine received official FEA T-shirts.

Hellyer Rites Held for Elkanan Hellyer at Mystic

Luther Caster and Mrs Maude Coltrain attended the funeral of Elkanan Hellyer brother of Mrs Caster. Services were Sunday afternoon at Swanson funeral home Mystic with relatives traveling from Denver Rockford Des Moines and other cities. Hellyer age 91 lived in Iconium Moravia and Mystic areas.

Miss Donna Underwood daughter of Mr and Mrs Roy Underwood Ottumwa and Kenneth Gatlin son of Mrs C E Ellis Ottumwa were married at 8 o clock Thursday evening Sept 27 at the Evangelical United Brethren church. Rev Lynn King read the double ring ceremony in the presence of immediate families. Attendants were Beverly Grinstead Ottumwa and Carl James Chariton. The bride wore a royal blue linen dress white velvet hat and red rose corsage and carried a white Bible. A reception followed at the bride’s parents home. They will live in Ottumwa.

Mystery farm picture identification plan explained

Farmers were invited to identify a farm feature in last week's aerial photo and win a free Union subscription. No callers were received last week, so none earned the prize.
