Chemicals Not Approved To Aid Keeping Soft Corn
Town farmers facing high moisture corn problems should rely on crib ventilators and mechanical drying rather than chemical preservatives. Experiments show powders with sodium and calcium carbonates do not prevent mold or heating. Proper crib ventilation 6 to 9 foot widths and moisture targets around 20 percent help prevent spoilage. crib during cold weather when moisture is 25 to 30 percent and use A-type ventilators.

Area clean up plan to eradicate brucellosis in Iowa herds
Dr. John Herrick of Iowa State College leads an area wide brucellosis eradication program arguing that cleaning up entire counties is essential. Plan B calls for blood testing, calfhood vaccination, and eventual slaughter of reactors, with quarantines and selective herd replacement. Milk ordinances push Grade A milk from clean herds but do not solve the broader issue as most human cases stem from direct animal contact.

Expect Same Hog Prices In 1952
Iowa State College economist Francis Kutish predicts 1952 hog prices will stay about the same as 1951 with 1952 hog slaughter likely higher in the early part of the year due to larger 1951 pig crops while 1952 farrowings may be lower. The hog corn ratio should be near normal, contingent on the 1952 corn crop and future feed output.
