Close spaced potatoes yield tops in Iowa tests

Potatoes spaced close together produce the top yields in Iowa State College experiments led by horticulturist E. P. Lana and plant pathologist W. J. Hooker. They tested four potato varieties to compare growth and output under dense planting.

Potatoes Respond to Spacing Across Varieties

A study tested Cobbler 6316 Kennebec and Cherokee at spacings of 4, 6, 9 and 12 inches. The 15 inch spacing yielded more large potatoes but fewer small ones and overall lowest yield. The 6 and 9 inch spacings produced the largest total yield with more medium potatoes across varieties. Cobbler showed the least spacing sensitivity while Cherokee had the least hollow heart susceptibility, which was more common in large tubers.
