A candidate for U S Representative plans a recount following the official canvas. He says he has not received word but was informed Steve Carter will petition for a recount on his behalf against Karl LeCompte, who led by about 1600 votes in the latest tally. Congress approval is required for a national office. the candidate would bear most costs if the result stands unchanged.
Union Homemakers met on November 14 with twelve women and six children present. The program featured a poem and a lesson on making work easier. They planned December gifts for Ottumwa orphans and invited township women to join future meetings.
Udell residents note family visits in Centerville and Des Moines. Mr and Mrs O C Brown celebrate their fifty eighth anniversary at home in Udell Tuesday. Missionaries Rev Robert Williams on furlough visit Ora Powells and Joe Price before heading to Winona Lake Ind. People travel from Denver Ind and Mexico Mo to visit kin and attend church events. A Brethren W M S plans Christmas boxes for Kentucky and Hope school at Centerville. Nearby farm sale of Robert Morlan draws local attention as families travel from Gary Ind Des Moines and Bloomsfield for related gatherings.
Mrs Edna Moore traveled to the Raymond Hughes home in Center ville on Monday to check on Mrs Hughes who is ill and under a doctor’s care.
Iowa State agronomist J A Stritzel says fall nitrogen applications for corn are safe when soils cool to 50 degrees or below. Urea and ammonium forms stay put, while nitrate moves with water. dry soils slow leaching, making fall application effective and insurance against spring losses.
Stritzel outlines spray methods using liquid nitrogen or soil injections with anhydrous ammonia or nitrogen solutions containing free nitrogen. He emphasizes spraying on surface, turning under, and achieving a tight seal to prevent ammonia escape. Odor presence may indicate ammonia loss during application.
The second annual National Farmers Organization convention was held in St Joseph Missouri at Hotel Robidoux from November 12 to 14. More than 800 delegates from 13 states and 175 000 former NFO members were expected to attend with county delegations and direct farmer viewpoints shaping the sessions. Appanoose County sent J W Zintz as chairman and delegates Doyle Hampton Neal Wagner Tony Buban Donald Horn Kermet Strickler.
Hilton Hustlers 4-H held its November 12 meeting at Hilton church basement starting 8:00 PM with a pledge. A motion funded $5 for winter coal. Ronnie Van Zante shared training school notes at Chariton. New 1956 57 record books issued. A December 4 club pot luck and grab bag were approved. Carl Rouse and Karl Rogers named to the program committee. Members present listed. meeting adjourned 8:35 PM. Reporter Karl Rogers.
The Urbana Doers 4-H club met at Linda and Nancy Ward's residence on November 5. Fifteen members answered roll call with the prompt What I Had for Breakfast. Two leaders and ten visitors attended.
Considerable 1956 corn production in Appanoose County is under government price support. By November 15 farmers had 68,018 bushels of the 1956 crop corn backed by loans, with 47,076 bushels eligible for the higher 1.48 per bushel rate for compliant producers and 21,942 bushels at 1.23 per bushel for non compliance. The prior year 80,407 bushels of 1955 corn were loaned, with price support limited to compliant farms.
The secretary's report was read and new business covered the discussion of updated record books. Linda Ward demonstrated biscuit making and Nancy Ward showed how to prepare no bake cookies. Reporter Nancy Ward attended.
