A Moravia gathering of local merchants at the fire station discussed pooling efforts to attract shoppers for Christmas. They approved a plan to hold Saturday drawings for free dressed turkeys between Thanksgiving and Christmas to entice housewives with ready to cook birds.
Readers can enter by dropping names in boxes at participating businesses with drawings held at the Community building on Saturdays. Winners will receive a sturkey ready to cook, with no limit on entries per person. Drawings require presence, and details on total turkeys per Saturday will be announced later in the Union.
The children of Moravia and vicinity are invited to visit the library and see the children’s books for their use. The library keeps the best reading material for children. New books were bought during the murhimeh and more are being ordered by our book committee, Mrs. Marjory Coulson and Mrs. Margaret Brooks.
Local residents and visitors share a busy period with hunting trips in north central town, family gatherings in Udell and nearby farms, and shower events in Agency. Notable mentions include Alfred Burkland of Keokuk visiting relatives, a birthday dinner for Alan Whisler, and the birth of Rickey Lynn Dixon with sister Lydia.
Appanoose county residents will receive the 1954 Christmas Seals on Monday November 22. Two coordinated seals with red and green backgrounds feature dancing children around a lit Christmas tree designed by Jorgen G Hansen. County chairwoman Mrs George Brown urges prompt purchases to support tuberculosis and heart disease work.
Taylor Township Farm Bureau gathered at New Hope schoolhouse Monday evening with Russell Barns leading in Guy Argó's absence. Entertainment by Herb Boblenz and Roscoe Pennington's groups followed a lunch. 1955 officers elected: Russell Burns director and Guy Argé secretary-treasurer.
Proceedings detail reimbursements, hospital, groceries, relief payments, postage, wages, and supplies from various entities including State Department of Social Welfare, St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, Super Valu, Thriftway, and Centerville National Bank, with numerous names and amounts recorded for county expenses and payroll. The document lists multiple vendors, individuals, and services such as hospital care, labor, janitorial, and maintenance, reflecting typical board financial operations and disbursements.
The Shanghai club met on November 10 with Dorothy Calhoun and many attendees. Participants included Doris and Elaine Christy Ice Christy Bert and Hazel Rinehart Allie Taylor Cora Murphy Bertha Overturf Iceal Scott Amy Hiner Esther and Raymond Perry Clarence Grace and Bobby Whitehead Dorothy Delbert and Karl Lee Calhoun Ruth McCord Barbara Allen and Toeal Scott. The next meeting is scheduled for November 23 with Ice Christy.
