Veterans’ 98th birthday marks last Civil War veteran in Appanoose County

State y celebrated his 98th birth day as the lone Civil War veteran in Appanoose County. Streepy, son of Anna, is now the last of three Civil War veterans noted in the area, with two others William Shuck and Byron D. Bates recently passing away. Streepy, who enlisted in Union Company 136th Township in August 1862 at age 18, was wounded at Marks Hill Arkansas in 1864 and later mustered out in 1885. He worries about great nephews Max and Robert Streepy serving in the current U S service.

Appanoose County Vote Reflects State Trends in Election

Unofficial returns from Appanoose county show Republicans leading in general races, mirroring statewide results. Gov. George A. Wilson appears set to defeat Clyde Herring for the Senate, Bourke B. Hickenlooper leads Nelson Kraschel for governor, and Karl W. LeCompte holds a wide edge in the fourth district. In Taylor township 298 votes were cast, with 220 straight Republican ballots and 65 Democratic. Polls drew a late surge after 8 p m, and the final precinct tally arrived after 9 a m Wednesday.

Three-Week Revival Ends at Local Brethren Church

A three week evangelistic camp meeting closed Sunday night at the United Brethren Church. Rev H Nell Maten of Glidden led messages and songs each evening, conducting three services weekly with prayer meetings at four homes each morning. Twenty seven conversions occurred during the revival. Pastor Rev G M Talbott assisted at all services.
