Officials confirm coffee will not be rationed again. a coffee stamp in Book Four was printed but not issued. Stamp 29 of the new book covers sugar from Nov 1 to Jan 15, 1944. A Moravia high school project reveals a walnut end table and a walnut foot stool made in 1920s by local students.
Mr and Mrs H R Fall of Chicago spent the weekend with Mrs C A Turner and family. They and the Turners attended the bath wedding anniversary of Elmer Patterson and his wife at the Patterson farm home four miles northeast of Oskaloosa. A noon dinner preceded an open house in the afternoon before the Falls returned to Chicago on Monday.
W B Scarcliff Moravia schools superintendent and W L Hoover vocational agriculture instructor attended an agriculture teachers meeting in Albia Monday evening to discuss plans for a farmers clinic on implement repair.
Women of the Methodist W. 8. C. Moravia high school prepares for both boys and girls basketball season with a home game against Unionville on Tuesday night. Don Blackman, the coach, says the first of 14 scheduled games will test the squads, with strong promise from the boys and optimism for the girls. The season’s schedule is advertised on page 3, funded by Moravia merchants and business leaders.
Mrs. Lemaster of Moravia area suffered a broken arm and severe cuts after a collision in Albia on Saturday afternoon while riding with Mr. Lemaster. They were later cared for in Albia and brought to Moravia the next day. The couple recently bought Emmett Scott’s property in Moravia and plan to move there.
Mrs Alfred Carlson hosted Tuesday for the 20th Century Club. Under Mrs Tucker the program covered Southwest Pacific islands with data on Dutch East Indies Solomon New Caledonia New Guinea New Hebrides Carolina islands. Mrs Freeman Jolly spoke on the Philippines New Zealand Samoa. The group approved an $8 United Way donation.
Mr and Mrs Claude Hawk hosted the Home Builders class for a masquerade gathering at the Hawk residence on Wednesday. I J Luse won best disguise while many attendees included Mr and Mrs Harry Woodward Rex Tisue T J Luse Emil Halden and Kathleen Carl VanZante Lloyd Brown Dorothy and Jerry Ralph Davis Helen Earl Boyer Carolyn Judy Kenneth Condra Wendell Marion Margaret Mary Bien Troy Adams Joyce Harold Hawk Lou Main Clinton Albertson Bobbia Lois Carolyn Richard Harold Burton and daughter of Knoxville joined others. Mrs Cameron spent Sunday with her daughter and Keith and family in Newton before returning home. Mrs J W Halden visited Centerville with niece Mrs B S Staley.

More than 30 Taylor township Farm Bureau members and families met at the J. L. Dodd home on Monday evening November 1 for the second monthly gathering. County extension director Glen Birlingmair led a discussion on farm problems before refreshments. The December meeting will be at the H. L. Hilton home. A California program and box supper are planned for November 12 at the California school with boxes requested from ladies. everyone is welcome.
Vosburgh program supper at Vosburgh school November 11 at 8 p m with Rex and Mary providing special music. Showers program Friday November 5 at 8 p m includes pie sandwiches coffee and boxes requested from ladies. New Hope program supper November 10 at 7 45 p m with coffee pie and sandwiches and boxes requested. Billy Carter spent Monday night at the Loyd Carter home.
Moravia residents met in the community building to plan May planting of canna bulbs and seeds. Mrs F W Blumenstock, president of the public library board, sponsors the project. Mayor D E Bishop attended and backed town council support. A February meeting will finalize plans. Bulbs may be obtained from several local residents led by Blumenstock.
The Ap panoose County Farm Bureau will hold its annual meeting at the Christian Church in Centerville on Tuesday evening, Nov. 3. Karl H. Fischer of Moravia, president, says Wousy W. B. Hamilton will be guest speaker. Officers will be elected and other business transacted. A nominating committee chaired by R. C. Wilson of Moravia includes E. M. Knapp of Centerville and R. C. Doree. Resolutions committee members are W. G. Lodwick Earl Exlina Peter Sidles Bryan Hart and E. Glenn Bailey. The evening meeting format, popular in 1942, will be repeated.
Members of the Young People's class of the Christian church elected new officers for the year at a Winnie Du Vail home gathering on Tuesday Oct 26. Daisy McCrory was named president Gene McCrory vice president Vern Jean Matherly secretary Patty Sawyer treasurer Jeraldine Hiner reporter. After the session they bobbed for apples popped corn and made popcorn balls.
Members of the Double Eight Club and husbands attended a party at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Magon Friday evening. Decorations and refreshments followed a Halloween motif. Card prizes went to Mrs. T. J. Luse and Emil Halden. Obituary note follows for Milton A. La Croix, 75, of Cornelius apartments, who died after a stroke earlier in the week. He was born in Moravia December 9, 1867. Surviving relatives include Blanche his widow, two brothers George of Carroll Nebraska and Charles in California, mother in law Mrs. Josephine Roush of Dakota City, two brothers in law W. G. Miller and L. W. Miller, son-in-law Harvey H. Grissinger, and grandson Billy Grissinger, all of Sioux City. Becker's funeral service of South Sioux City handled arrangements with interment in a Wayne Nebraska cemetery.
W B and B Scarcliff, Moravia public schools superintendent, will attend the state teachers association meeting in Des Moines on Friday.
A cooperative dinner at the Dalton Darrah residence honored Pvt. Clarence Earl Purvis on his 21 day furlough from Texas A and M College College Station. Attendees included numerous local families and the Purvis and Darrah households. Purvis's home address and military unit details were listed.
Mrs H E Watts returned Thursday from a nine week visit with children at West Point Nebraska Granger Hedrick and Ottumwa. Mrs Roger Hartman of Asealoosa visited her parents and brother Everett Morris over the weekend. Mr and Mrs Harvey Main spent Nov 3 and 4 in Des Moines for a check up. George Irelan visited his daughter and family east of town. Mr and Mrs John Fontinel and son Bobby and Mrs G Fontinel hosted six o clock dinner with Mr and Mrs William Gardner. The Rev and Mrs G M Talbot spent time with daughter and son in Russell. Mrs Zell Burton and Mrs Carl Street of Rock Island and Mrs Clyde Anders of Cenverville visited Mrs Bill Laws ill. Eddie Main and family went to Kirksville where Mrs Eddie Main entered the hospital for treatment. Mr and Mrs John Horstman and Norma honored hosts at U O Main home for birthday anniversaries. The Rev E L Pullman and family attended the Eddyville Methodist church centennial observance. Mr and Mrs J P Day hosted dinner for Margaret Ward who left for California. Dorothy Nowels of Des Moines was a guest. The Rev E L Pullman and others attended a talk by Dr Harold Case in Centerville.
In The FIGHT In The FIGHT x FIRST LIEUT Francis Blomgren and Mrs Blomgren have a daughter Mary Carol born at St Joseph hospital Centerville Friday. Lieut Blomgren and Max Stover, en route from Salt Lake City to the coast, visited wife and daughter Margo Maxine at Gas Isle home near Moravia. Firkins, son of Moravia, serves as submarine base electrical officer at Key West after 26 years in the navy. Oehler of Ardmore arrives for a 15 day furlough. Bennett of Hawaii home on 80 day leave. Max McDonough stationed at Adak Island in Aleutians, promoted to seaman first class. Everett Morris leaves for army duty. brothers August and Vanice in navy.
Moravia churches unite for a morning service Sunday November 14 at the Moravia Methodist church to hear Capt. Button F. Tarr United States army chaplain and learn the names added to the Moravia service flag. Tarr a former Moravia resident will be accompanied by his wife and children on active duty with him in Chicago visit plans to follow.
About 36 attendees joined a cooperative supper at the American Legion home sponsored by the Legion Auxiliary to honor service men’s mothers wives and sisters. Afterward many visited while others played bingo with Mrs. Howard Smith and Mrs. J P Day overseeing the games.
Mrs. Birdie Main celebrated her birthday on Wednesday evening October 27 with her sons and daughters in law joining for supper and an evening. Present were Gaylord Main and wife from Iconium Gene Main and Carol Ann Dwight and Herbert Main.
County War Board Chairman Robert A Warren says Iowa must mobilize every farm for 1944 production targets set after the Des Moines War Food Production conference. Soybeans gain priority with a 47 percent acreage increase. corn up 6 percent. oats and barley adjusted. Beef cattle and hogs to decline. milk cows holdings steady. chicken numbers trimmed. eggs hoped to stay near 1943 levels. Local goals to be advised by county officials.
Moravia conducted a two day drive for the United War Fund and the Boy Scouts of America led by chairman Mrs C M McFatridge. About 200 individuals and firms contributed with local lodges clubs also giving. The town raised roughly three times last year’s amount including $50 from last scrap drive funds. Beneficiaries include USO United Seaman's Service War Prisoners Aid and many relief funds plus Boy Scouts of America for local and council needs.
