Black cutworm biology and control guidance for corn in wet fields
Early April to now, moths lay eggs in low wet areas and outbreaks occur in flooded fields. The black cutworm hides by day and feeds at ground level at night, damaging corn when plants reach 6 to 8 inches tall. If control is applied early, 2 pounds toxaphene or 0.25 pounds enctin per acre in 10 gallons water over the row can protect stands, with trials using diazinon granules at Tim Cowan and Loren Eddy farms.
