Moravia Students Shine At State Meet In Oskaloosa

Moravia high school musicians performed well at the state meet in Oskaloosa. One division I rating of nine entries and seven division II ratings were earned including Ruby Johnson winning division I for her B flat clarinet solo. Other ensembles received division II honors in woodwind quintet, mixed clarinet quartet, and more.

Moravia High School Graduation Hits Record Size

Moravia high school will hold the 46th annual commencement Tuesday evening with 36 seniors and 15 eighth graders promoted to high school. Activities include a Thursday play The Phantom Bells, baccalaureate Sunday, and commencement address by Rev. W R Keesey. Diplomas and certificates will be presented by Dr C T Slavin and Sept Wm H Young.

Death Notices: Henry Watts Mourned by Moravia Community

Funeral services held at Moravia Methodist Church for Henry Watts who died May 3 1942 aged 78. Born Salem Iowa October 29 1868 he lived in Iowa most of his life, farmed in Henry County, moved to Moravia in 1912. Survived by wife Agnes Woods four children twelve grandchildren two brothers and two half sisters. He was a longtime church member and former Moravia school board president.

Moravia schools will lose Wilbur C. Harris music director after four years. He declines the next year's contract to join Twin City Ordnance Plant in Minneapolis as an ordnance inspector, likely starting mid June. Mrs Harris served on the faculty and aided the music department. The community lauds their service and offers thanks.

Mother Daughter Meeting At U B Church

The W M A society of the U B church will hold the event at the church Friday at 7 o clock. Each mother is asked to bring a covered dish and service for two. Mrs George Talbott will lead the lesson with the topic I Believe in a World Fem py of God.

Moravia Hosts Sectional High School Baseball Tournament

The Moravia diamond hosts the sectional tournament this Thursday to Saturday with eight teams including Attica Rathbun Centerville Oskaloosa Hamilton Harvey Addyville and Moravia Moravia faces Eddyville in the final opening round game at 5 00 pm Thursday. Admission 16 cents plus tax for students and 27 cents plus tax for adults. Moravia’s Greyhounds aim to deliver strong play and local fans will enjoy first class entertainment as the series runs seven innings unless coaches agree to five.

Moravia School Issues Sugar Ration Books to 762

On Tuesday 762 sugar ration books were issued at the Moravia school building with registration hours extended to 3:30 PM. War Ration Book One may later cover other products. canning sugar requires county board approval after June 1. Registration continues Thursday afternoon for those without books, under Supt. W H Young and local faculty.

Reed Joins Navy as Mechanic in World War I Veteran

Mr. Russell Reed, a World War I veteran and former Moravia resident, has joined the navy as a mechanic. He was sent to San Diego, California. Mrs. Russell Reed and their son Jerry of Oskgloosa were weekend guests at the Paul Broshar home.

Virgil Pence Entered Army From Moravia and Omaha

Virgil Pence son of Mr and Mrs Delph Pence of Moravia was inducted into the army at Omaha Nebraska on April 22. He was sent to the Fort Leavenworth training center Kansas and expects a transfer soon. Pence worked for a large produce company at Fairmont Minnesota and is married. Mrs Pence will remain in Fairmont where she is employed. They recently visited the Pence family home in Moravia.

Mystery Play The Phantom Bells Thursday Night

Senior class presents The Phantom Bells a mystery play set in a haunted house with ghosts bells and footprints. Laura Rhodes and her step mother visit the House of the Bells as mysteries unfold with a cast including Ileta McDunel Mrs Rhodes Wilma Boardman Mary Ellen Ellis on Lela Sayles and others. The eight o clock performance in the gym promises a thrilling show.
