Careful Planning Will Insure Enough Pasture

H D Hughes of Iowa State College urges a systematic pasture management program to preserve pasturage for Iowa livestock amid bluegrass damage from last year. Winter rye seeded last fall lasts into June, and spring pasture seeding combining oats and diverse grasses, with sudan grass, can provide continuous pasture for summer and fall. Oats act as nurse crop. reseeded bluegrass should not be pastured until 5 to 6 inches high.

Pasture plans depend on ground firmness and rain

Rye pasturing hinges on soil firmness and avoiding newly seeded lots after heavy rains. Oats provide early grazing until July, sudan grass lasts to frost, timothy clovers and brome seedings cover rest of season but soil should not be overgrazed. Clovers and timothy not for permanent grazing until 1938. Sudan grass suited to Iowa conditions enhances mid summer and early fall grazing.
