Rev Burton Tarr Called To Beacon New York

Word reaches here that Rev. Burton Tarr has been called to pastor the First Methodist Church of Beacon New York. The appointment was approved by the New York Conference cabinet and the Tarrs will move to their new home this week. Beacon, a city of about 12 000 on the Hudson River about 60 miles north of New York City, was formerly served by Rev. Tarr at East Branch New York.

Underwood Shines in Ottumwa Game for Centerville

Centerville defeated Ottumwa 4 to 3 in a South Eastern Town hardball league game at Ottumwa Sunday. Paul Underwood starred on the mound, allowing four hits and recording nine strikeouts as Centerville posted the win.

Moravia Band Auxiliary Membership Drive Opens Friday

The Moravia Band Auxiliary kicks off its membership drive on Friday May 6 with a dues paying meeting at 3 46 p m in the school band room. Junior and senior band parents are auto members, and others may join. The first membership issued this week honors Mr and Mrs Von Tracy in memory of their son Billy. Dues are 1 00 per year per family payable yearly monthly or quarterly. All interested persons are invited to attend and join.

A group of Albia friends gathered Monday evening to celebrate Mrs. C. C. Smith's birthday with ice cream and cake. Guests included Cy Hall and family, Ga il Hinton and daughters Vivian Ruth and Mary Alice, Clell Long and son Samuel, F. C. Hiatt, Vernon Anderson, and Frank Wilson with sons.

Hurliman Named Moravia Ag Instructor

The Moravia board of education elected Carl W. Hurliman as vocational agriculture instructor for the local schools. He is pursuing agriculture studies at Iowa State College and holds a B.S. from Kirksville State Teachers College earned in 1930. Hurliman has ten years of non vocational teaching experience in several Missouri towns and has run a farm for five years. The family plans to move to Moravia around July 1.

Wilhelm Blumenstock of Hibbing Minnesota, formerly of Mc Travia, has been named a delegate to the Minnesota state Republican convention to be held in Minneapolis in June. His selection followed a convention recently held in Duluth.

Senior Play Is Friday Night at School Gymnasium

Ten Eighth Graders To Get Certificates Of Promotion

Moravia high school will hold its 42nd annual commencement exercises next Tuesday evening May 10 in the school building. Thirty-one seniors will receive diplomas and ten eighth graders will receive certificates of promotion. Rev. E Harold Jackson of Mt. Ayr Iowa, Methodist Episcopal church pastor, will speak on The Unioned Task. He is a Moravia High School class of 1917 salutatorian graduate. The program includes processional and recessional by Virginia Argo, invocation by Rev T J Zike, and music by a girls sextette.

Salem Cemetery Cleanup Highlighted by Local Volunteers

Twenty three volunteers gathered last Thursday at Salem cemetery to trim trees haul brush and thoroughly clean the grounds overseer Mr McAninch led the effort. The cemetery dates to 1860 and harbors many pioneer burials including charter members of the United Brethren community.

Relatives gathered Sunday May 1 at the Obe Burns home to celebrate his birthday with a cooperative dinner. Mr Burns received several useful presents and photographs were taken in the afternoon. Moravia Orchestra Heads to Iowa City State Contest

The Moravia school orchestra will depart Thursday morning for Iowa City to compete in the Class B state music contest. The group performs at 8 a.m. after earning a superior rating at the Osceola district contest weeks ago. The ensemble faced rehearsal disruptions due to the director Mr. Gould’s illness, his quarantine ending last Saturday, and new practice has followed this week to prepare for state.

Shower Honors Mr and Mrs Howell at Carl Coffin home

A shower for Mr and Mrs Sim Howell hosted by Mrs Carl Coffin and others drew 37 attendees Thursday evening. The wedding party entered to I wish I was Single Again and Battle Cry of Freedom as vows were exchanged. The bride Keith Rose wore a print dress with white hat and veil. Gladys Harsh proclaimed bridegroom and Steven Mc Kern carried flowers while Robert Rose bore the jar ring for the ceremony. Gifts topped a rainbow May basket archway as guests enjoyed tri color fruit salad cupcakes and coffee. Refreshments were served by Mary Coffin Nellie Rose Genevieve Donaven and Cecil Howell. The couple shared candy bars and cigars with attendees.
