The Baail Cowell Unit of the American Legion Auxiliary met at the Legion Home in Easton on Tuesday evening May 2 with fourteen members present. President Gael Broshar presided. plans were made for the annual Poppy Sale on May 27, Memorial Day May 30, and the county meeting of the Auxiliary on June 2. Refreshments were served at the close by Mrs. H G Broshar and Mrs. Bert Turner. Members are urged to attend these Auxiliary meetings.
Moravia High School sent competitors to Chariton for the District Commercial contest on April 29. The Novice Typing team earned second with 48 WPM, trailing Ottumwa at 49, while the M. H. & team included Juanjita Hiatt Margaret Hiatt and Josephine Scott. The Amateur Shorthand individual won overall with a high grade, Velda Hiatt representing Moravia n, and Mary Coffin the Amateur Individual Typist. Two Moravia teams advance to the State Contest in Des Moines on May 28, as other schools competed in Chariton.
The county ministerial association will meet in the Methodist church at Unionville on Monday May 8 at 4 30 p m There will also be an evening session with Rev Mr Pinches as the speaker
Voters by 131 to 83 approved a $1000 bond for purchasing moving and remodeling a town hall. Total 141 votes met the required 80 percent threshold. Community support favored relocating a frame building from the school district, with plans to move locate and remodel under way. I F C workers to be used per relief council approval.
Gas fumes from a gasoline stove in the Crowder Bakery rear exploded on a Wednesday afternoon around 1 30. The front plate glass window was demolished with no other damage. Two people were inside but unharmed. Harry Stocker had just stepped away from the telephone and Mrs Crowder had just entered the front when the blast occurred.
J B Sneed began duties as assistant postmaster at Moravia on May 1 succeeding Mrs J P Albert who served nearly ten years. Mr and Mrs W W Slaughter and family left Tuesday for Oregon to visit Portland Pendleton and Baker where Mr Slaughter works in the U S Forestry Service.
J R Barkley and R R Morrow from Moulton opened a campaign against repeal of the 18th amendment in Moravia last Sunday. The meeting at M E B church was led by Rev J C Behrens with Hoth speeches on pre prohibition evils and the younger generation. Morrow spoke on alcohol’s effects on the body while Barkley shared countrywide views and cartoons. Future meetings are planned before the June 20 vote.
We thank neighbors and friends who helped save part of Grandin Hiatt’s belongings during last week’s fire. Gratitude also to the fire department for their aid. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Histt.
Attention The E. S. announces a regular meeting on Tuesday May 8 with initiation and a social evening in honor of teacher members. Practice is scheduled for Friday evening May 5.
The menu lists chicken and noodles mashed potatoes gravy butter beans tomatoes spaghetti perfection salad bread butter jelly peaches angel food cake and burnt sugar cake for the U B Aid dinner on Wednesday May 17.
Iowa voters confront a June 20 special election on repealing the eighteenth amendment. Delegates chosen at county mass conventions will campaign for or against repeal, with separate lists and a two-column ballot. The process, judges, and clerks are set, while state law and August deliberations shape liquor policy in Iowa.
A local dinner menu lists smothered chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy accompanied by sweet potatoes cabbage salad tomatoes with spaghetti bread butter jelly coffee and pie. The card highlights a hearty meal offering traditional comforts.

A surprise birthday dinner was held for Mr. Otha Hiatt and daughter Lois Jean on Sunday April 30th their birthdays the 2ath. Relatives gathered for a noonday feast with each bringing a three basket contribution. Guests included many Hiatt and Walker family members and their children within the gathering.
The Moravia Public School band gave its second annual formal concert in the school gym last Thursday, entertaining a large audience with marches, serenades, overtures, and trombone solos. Soloists Jean Shirley Albert and Billy Tracy drew applause, with vocal acts by John Johnson and Wendell Roberts. The Freshman band performed, and the brass sextet plus harmony pieces featured Dayton Dotson, Harold Hawk, Carl Bivin, Leo Kaster, Donald Kaster, Clell Coulaon, Beulah Blahop, Anna beth Keemer, and Gertrude Green. Director Dale Caris received praise after his Valletta solo. Band letters were awarded to senior members John Powell, James Reich, Cleo Barnes, John Johnson, and Wendell Roberts.
Moravia High School baseball ended a two game skid with back to back shutout wins over Unionville and Moulton. Paul Underwood struck out 16 and 10 batters respectively as the team posted 7 inning games. Unionville scored 1 and Moravia had 10 runs aided by 10 hits and errors. Keith Kennedy left the game after being hit by a pitch. Irwin scored on a runner from third base in the late fifth.
Aubry B. Jordan of Moravia died at his home on Sunday morning after a long illness. A longtime station agent for Iowa Southern Utilities Co, he lived most of his life in Moravia. Born February 6 1883 in Ringgold County Iowa he was married to Dora M Foland in 1909 and active in the Methodist church. Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Moravia Methodist church with burial in Crist cemetery.
Mrs Lesta Whicker 19 year old wife of Ralph Whicker died after an operation at St Joseph hospital Centerville. A Brethren church member active with youth work she lived on the Waggoner farm south of Unionville. She leaves husband father three brothers Dean Arnold Nesl and a sister Mrs Dwight Powell. Funeral services were held at 2 00 Sunday at the Brethren church.
