War time weather and community notes from Albia area
A long local column covers visits by Kinser Valley residents including G R Darby and families in Albia and Centerville. It notes wood-sawing activity and a minor death, plus Moravia Band entertainment in Ottumwa and a furlough homecoming for Lester Pollard from Camp Claiborne. School instruction, baptist and chapter meetings, and county contest plans are described alongside community greetings and upcoming events.
No More Washing Machines Until Then
The author muses that washing remains burdensome as long as mud stained garments require tubs or creaking pails to clean. He jokes optimistically about alternatives, then laments that even with future devices the same dirt and labor may recur. Two shiploads of sugar sunk en route to the United States threaten shortages, yet the ships and sailors cannot be spared. Cuban farmers depend on the market, making a sugar halt undesirable though sorghum and corn syrup could substitute.
