Federal Boating Numbering Requirements Implemented
The new rules require a $3.00 filing fee at the post office, a blue $3.00 Federal boating stamp, and a temporary certificate as proof of compliance until processed by the Coast Guard. Permanent numbers appear on embossed plastic certificates showing the Coast Guard number, which must be affixed to each bow side and kept on board. The Coast Guard number is valid for three years from the owner’s next birthday after issue. Documentary proof of title is not required. Applications and blanks are available at Marine Inspection Offices, with fees paid at the Post Office. Even boats numbered before March 31 1960 must apply for a new number on April 1, with previous numbers usable temporarily. Operators may continue to sail if they have applied, paid, and kept proof of payment.
