Ruth Johnson placed second in the oratorical division at the state preliminary contest held in Udell last Friday evening. Moravia was represented by Dorothy Marie Ellison in dramatic and Helen Carter in humorous. Udell Moulton Unionville also competed with Joe Callen of Moulton taking first in oratorical Mildred Harrington of Unionville first in dramatic and Josephine Siler of Moulton first in humorous.
Moravia FFA defeated Centerville 21 to 9 in a brisk matchup, holding the visitors scoreless for nearly three quarters. Bucknell toppled Moravia 39 to 17 in the same evening, as Moravia’s regular season ended on their floor. The Moravia high school team advances to the Albia sectional tournament next week.
The agriculture school held a follow up meeting at the high school with eleven farmers and boys present. Topics included lambing time seeds and diseases of ewes and lambs and causes of ewe losses this spring and how to prevent grubs and pregnancy disease with proper protein feeds and salt trough tar.
Sam Kingery announced with his wife at the Union office that their celebratory plan was altered. The intended couple was Mr and Mrs Sam Singery, not present, by mistake the couple wed were Miss Viola Clayworth and Tom Kingery in Knoxville, Kansas, February 1936. They now reside with Tom's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Kingery.
The January February 1986 race in Morsiia narrows to three candidates, though voter knowledge remains low. Incumbent Republican Albert continues to plod along content to stay on the job.
Moravia high school will stage its Contest Musicale on Wednesday evening March 11 featuring the concert band orchestra girls glee club sextette and mixed chorus plus solo numbers. Novelty and popular pieces will be included as the festival aims to be the year’s top musical event. Admission 10 or 20 cents with proceeds funding contestants’ contest expenses. rural eighth graders admitted free with teacher certification.
Neighbors held a farewell party for Mr. and Mrs. Dale Perry and Mr. and Mrs. Lee Hiatt with their children at the Hiatt home on Saturday evening February 22. Attendees included Mrs. Hester Miller, Chas Fulton, Miss Blanche Barker, Gene Lathan, Leon Burns and others. Guests enjoyed cards, dominoes, visiting, and homemade ice cream cake and coffee.
Attorney W. C. Moore of Seymour spoke to about twenty five Moravia residents at the Community Hall on Tuesday, urging support for the Townsend pension plan. The meeting offered memberships in the Townsend Club and the chance to buy literature, noting the club seeks a modest tax route rather than a $200 per month payout, with 2 percent federal sales tax as a product.
Appanoose county will gain about 250 additional old age assistance awards under federal Social Security Board approval. Iowa officials announce a $548,100 start toward matching Iowa's pension fund, with $780,000 expected quarterly through 1988. Governor Herring notes every $2 head tax yields $4 for pensions, urging timely Golden Rule Tax payments.

The U B Aid dinner menu lists roast beef and noodles with mashed potatoes creamed peas parsnips sauer kraut and Weiners. Waldorf salad picklog bread and butter ginger bread with whipped cream and coffee offered.
The Moravia Community club membership committee Bert Turner C A Veach and Charles Broshar report more than thirty applications secured for membership with expectations of exceeding that total when the drive ends The surge surpasses the club’s previous yearly membership and boosts outlook for the organization.
Interest in the Moravia school election is notably quiet with no opposition. Only one ticket filed includes C. T. Slavin, John D. Veach as directors and P. D. Schreiner as treasurer. Polls open Monday from noon to 7 PM at the Moravia Community Building.
A Moravia community caucus will meet at the Community Building Friday evening at 7 30 to choose eight delegates and alternates for the county convention. The convention will be held in Centerville on Saturday March 14. W G Firkins and Mrs J D Minnes chair the committee.
A community get-together is planned for the near future with details to be released later. The notice invites local residents to anticipate further information and confirms the event is not finalized yet.
The Monroe County Farm Bureau and Extension partners host a machinery adjustment and repair school at John Veach's implement store on Friday March 20 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Experts will teach farmers to adjust and repair binders and mowers at no charge, with parts bought by owners. other equipment like planters and plows will be discussed. Additional notices will follow in this paper.
Kenneth Blackman, Sewall high school athletic coach and son of Moravia residents, signed to play for the Huston club of the Texas League this season. He will report after the current term. Last season he was with Cedar Rapids in the Western League, signed as a catcher but served as a versatile utility man. He excels in basketball and recently played with the Centerville Independents, winners of Ottumwa tournament.
Weather moved Farm Bureau training schools to Centerville for two days focusing on floor coverings. Miss Erma Garner illness delayed session while Miss Mildred Wilson from Ames Extension Service taught. Fourteen ladies attended Thursday as local representatives from Taylor township joined. Plans set for March 24 achievement day. committee meets March 6 to finalize details.
Basil Cowell Post of the American Legion hosts a benefit card party at the Legion Home this Wednesday evening. An oyster supper will be served. All men are invited to attend. Wm. Morgan acts as agent at the Interurban station during Henry Prow’s absence.
Coulson was elected worshipful master of Antiquity Lodge No. 262 A F and A M on Monday evening to fill the vacancy left by W T Smiths removal from Moravia. L H Beery was named senior warden N R B Ward junior warden J F Albert senior deacon. Officers installed after the election as the lodge prepares for weeks of degree work and upcoming activity.
Miss Naomi Scott of Walnut City married Allen Kinsinger of Ash Grove at the Christian Church in Walnut City. The ceremony was at noon with Rev. W. G. Lagle of Moravia officiating. Attendants were Mr. and Mrs. Carlson of Newton, Iowa. The bride will teach near Walnut City and they plan to live on a North Bend area farm after school ends.
Relatives here have word that Will Sawin died Monday in Atchison Kansas. He formerly lived in Moravia. Further details are expected to be released for publication at a later date.
Georgiana Winsler daughter of Mr and Mrs G B Winsler is elated after winning a five dollar prize in a nationwide photograph contest conducted by Waltz Studio Inc Des Moines. The honor reflects well on the Winsler family as Georgiana receives word of her achievement.
The Unionville Independent School District will hold its annual election on Monday March 9. Two directors and a treasurer are to be elected. Paul Harrington and John Morrison are candidates to succeed themselves as directors and Mrs Emily Plitt is a candidate for treasurer. No other candidates have filed.
Homer Newburn was in Moravia last Friday printing bills for a farm sale to be held at the farm near Foster this Thursday in March. The Newburns plan to move to Ottumwa soon.
The schedule lists Sunday School at 10 a.m. led by Supt M A Johnson, morning worship at 11:00, Christian Endeavor at 6:30 p m, and evening worship at 7 80 with Junior Endeavor at 2:00 Sunday afternoon under Pastor F C Scott.
The Church of Christ holds Sunday School at 10 a.m. with Mrs. Birdie Main as superintendent. Communion Service at 11 a.m. Ladies Aid plans a meeting with Clara Irelan on Wednesday.
Iconium Circuit lists Sunday School at Iconium 10 a m morning worship 11 a m. Fairview Sunday School 9 a m and worship 9 45 a m. Hilton Sunday School 10 a m. A special Boy Scouts meeting at Iconium Saturday evening 8 o'clock led by Pastor J W Stine. Parsonage phone on record.
The Methodist Episcopal Sunday program lists 10 am Sunday School 11 am morning worship with Epworth League at 6 30 pm and 7 30 pm evening service. Wesley Chapel has 9 30 am worship and 10 30 am Sunday School. Dr J T Boeye District Superintendent will preach at both Wesley Chapel and Moravia next Sunday. Moravia morning worship will be followed by a basket dinner in the church basement. A 2 30 pm Quarterly Conference follows dinner. All welcome. Charles L Ellis pastor.
The Bible Class met Sunday at the regular morning and evening hours with good attendance. A preview is planned for Thursday evening and all are welcome to attend with a Bible. W G Lagle, teacher.
The World Day of Prayer was observed in Moravia on Friday with all town missionary societies uniting at the Methodist parsonage. Mrs. C L Ellis led the program and Rev Ellis offered prayer. Mrs Olive Miltenberger read the scripture as several talks and musical numbers were given. An offering supported missionary work was taken.
The 20th Century Club hosted a belated Lincoln social at Mrs. Tom Cameron’s home on March 3. Roll call touched on Lincoln or current events. A program on Lincoln’s life followed with solos by Miss Elizabeth Cameron and Mrs. Lorena Albert. Hosts Miltenberger and Carter arranged refreshments.
Moravia high school girls basketball team advances to the sectional state tournament at Centerville this weekend. They meet Promise City in the first game scheduled for Thursday at 9 30 p m.
C C Jones and Van Long accompanied two carloads of Moravia Cooperative Marketing Association livestock to the St Louis market on Monday evening.
