Control Potato Pests Best With Spraying At Proper Time

Improve potato yields by spraying at the correct stage to control pests. The Colorado potato beetle, or potato bug, defends its crop against treatments when not timed properly.

Potato Leaf Hopper and Colorado Potato Beetle Control

Iowa State College entomologist C H Richardson recommends spray timing and materials to control potato leaf hoppers and the Colorado potato beetle. For leaf hoppers spray two to three times in June and July when six or more insects per leaf, using Bordeaux mixture. The beetle may be dusted with calcium arsenate and lime or sprayed with calcium arsenate in water. Mixing calcium arsenate with Bordeaux allows simultaneous control of both pests, though multiple sprays are usually required.
