We and I in Columns and a Soldier’s Letter
A columnist explains the newsroom habit of using we to refer to self and the audience. The piece recalls school instructions on avoiding personal opinions in journalism and notes a World War II era letter from band director G. G. Peterson in the army air corps in San Antonio. Congressman Karl M. EeCompte sends congratulations to the editor and his bride along with a cookbook, a coincidence noted by the column.
