Monday election names candidates for general in fall

In Appanoose county the primary election showed a slight drop from 1954. Democratic sheriff race narrowed to three, Eddy 451 Robertson 443 Evans etc. McClellan 952 Wells 902, all over 35 percent. Hickenlooper re-nominated as U S senator. Hough unopposed for governor. Pendleton edged by Nicholas for lieutenant governor. Erbe led attorney general race, others unopposed. County ticket renominations included Clerk of Court Mage Luse over Eddie Adams, Recorder McCord over Moulton, and McClellan over Wells for supervisor, with Bob Warren over Albertson and Batley for 58 supervisor. Ed Powers led county attorney votes. Loveless governor. Bartley lieutenant governor. Local interest centered on ULindskoog’s bid amid Carter’s lead. Carter carried seven counties to Kramer five and Lindskoog two in the 14th district. County races focused on sheriff and 57 board member. sheriff decision to be settled by convention.

Moravia to Hire New Agriculture Instructor

Moravia school board contracted Bernie Valentine to fill the vocational agriculture instructor vacancy starting July 1. He succeeds Vernon Thorson who leaves teaching for farm management business. Valentine, a University of Missouri graduate, lives in Lucerne and will move into Garnet Brain property with his wife.

Wesley Chapel Bible School closes with June program

The Wesley Chapel Bible School finished with a Sunday program in June. Forty children enrolled in sessions for kindergarten to junior groups, with Rev Banks Doggett as director and Evelyn Daniels as helper. Certificates were given. a picnic and park outing followed.

Neighbors Plow and Plant 75 Acres Tuesday

Seventeen tractors and ample equipment assisted Dan Mihalovich’s farm on the town’s west edge to plow dished and plant 75 acres of corn and beans. Mihalovich was hospitalized Saturday with hemorrhage but showed progress at Centerville hospital.

Harsh home talks lead to 4 H dorm funds

Jim Argo and Bob Harsh spoke at the Harsh residence on Tuesday evening May 28. A Moravia trip on Friday morning sought merchants' contributions for a new 4 H boys dormitory at Appanoose county fairgrounds, raising $22.75. Attendees included Jerry Roblenz, Donald and David West, Jim, Charles and Guy Argo, Bob Harsh, and Jim and Russell Burns.

Alumni Reunion Held Here Memorial Day at Moravia Park

The Moravia park Memorial Day alumni reunion featured a noon basket dinner and an afternoon business session electing Harold Mason as president and Merle Smith as vice president. The committee on arrangement included Mrs. Frank Wilson Mrs. Wayne Thompson Mrs. Loren Walter and Mrs. Lee Hiatt. The group planned to hold the 1957 reunion at the same site on the Sunday after Memorial Day with attendees from Wyoming Mason City Hedrick Des Moines and nearby towns.

Monroe County 4-H Girls Attend Lake Ahquabia Camp

About 24 Monroe County 4-H girls left Albia Monday to join the tri county camp at Camp Ahquabia with Marion and Clarke counties sending delegates. The program includes swimming crafts recreation and outdoor cookery with evening speakers parties and snacks. Monroe Hospital Volunteers Begin

The Monroe County Hospital Auxiliary forms a hostess committee starting June 2 to greet visitors, guide patients, deliver mail, and run errands daily. Hours are 9 to 10 a.m. and 6:45 to 8:45 p.m. A sewing committee begins June 8 at 9 a.m. in the Auxiliary room to mend linens and make needed items. Moravia opens with two softball wins as Johnson and McDanel pitched. Keith Farrier hit a homer for Moravia, and John Grenfell scored on a catcher’s error in a 2-0 win over Moulton. A public meeting on enlarging Belmond Community school district led by Harold C. Simerson will be held June 11 at 8:00 p.m. in the Moravia school gym, open to all.

Ministers of the Albia district of Evangelical United Brethren churches met at the Moravia church for a session of business and instruction. Dr H O Thompson of Des Moines supervised the gatherings. West Point Graduate Jerry Huff Receives Commission

Jerry H. Huff of Blakesburg son of Mr and Mrs Charles H Huff graduated from the U S Military Academy at West Point on Tuesday June 5 He was commissioned a second lieutenant in the armored branch and will receive a bachelor of science degree Appointed by Representative Karl M LeCompte he was a cadet sergeant in his senior year Huff is a 1951 Blakesburg high school graduate and former Iowa State College student active in the camera club cadet dance band and staff of Howitzer the academy yearbook.

Mrs Lester Sawvel Returns From Centerville Hospital

Mrs Lester Sawvel came home Sunday evening after a week as a patient at St Josephs hospital in Centerville. Mitzi Sawvel, previously recuperating at home, resumed her work in Des Moines on Sunday. Reverend F C Welug of Mare supplied the pulpit at Nacangne Bombay to fill the vacancy at Rigat church until a regular pastor is secured.
