Josephine McDonald, daughter of Mr and Mrs Clyde McDonald of Moravia, was awarded a diploma at the State Teachers College in Cedar Falls last Sunday. The ceremony honored graduates including Mrs Rarl McVeigh and others as listed in the misspelled OCR.

Moravia town council met Tuesday evening and decided to seek voluntary subscriptions of money to finance another light coat of oil on the principal streets. The plan avoids costs of compulsory funding and is reported to be yielding good results so far according to solicitors.
All mothers wives and sisters of men in service are invited to attend a Friendship Party at the Legion Home Wednesday June 10 from 2 00 until 4 00 p m This is an official invitation signed by Members of Legion Auxiliary.
Mr and Mrs J B Kinson served new potatoes Saturday described as larger than hen eyes and not grown in a cave. The casual note emphasizes fresh harvest and home dining.
John Selby enjoyed a joyful day Sunday as six of his seven children gathered at home for the first time in years. Attendees included Virgil Johnson family, Tom Main family, William Barnes clan, Russell Gillespie family, Howard Funkhouser family, Hiatt Selby family, and others from Moravia, Blakesburg, and Peoria. Some left early for work, with plans to reunite soon. Mr. and Mrs. Murdy also visited relatives in Moulton Monday.
Miss Marceline EE Carter became the bride of James B Turner in a Wednesday evening ceremony at the bride’s home. Rev William Knight officiated. The couple planned a Chicago trip and a home at First and Eighth street in Deadfoure. Guests served pink and white refreshments.
Funeral services for Rev A M Smith who died suddenly at his Moravia home on May 27 were held at Moravia Methodist Church with Rev E L Pullman officiating. Interment followed in Moravia cemetery. He was born January 6 1867 in Huntsburg Ohio and married Mary Ellen Kile in 1890. Seven children survive and he served numerous Iowa towns before retirement in 1939 and moving to Moravia.
Mrs. Charles Coffin received a letter from her nephew Major John R. Lovell announcing his arrival in New York on Monday. He reported to Washington at once and described his health as good. Lovell had spent two years away from home, first going to Berlin in 1989 for war maneuvers and later being held by the U S Embassy for duty before returning to the United States aboard the Drottningholm from Lisbon in an exchange of diplomats and citizens. There were 908 passengers aboard.
Mrs J P Coffin and P K Horner hosted a Sunday dinner at the Coffin home honoring Claude Magee and his wife from Ft Madison who wed May 16. Guests included Mr and Mrs R L Tavy and daughter Roberta. Magees are the former Susia Tarr, niece of Coffin and Horner.
Alfred Howell of south of town suffered a severe finger injury while using a corn sheller early Tuesday morning. He was rushed to a Centerville doctor where part of the bone was removed and several stitches were needed to close the wound. Howell, rejected by the army on May 26 at Ft Des Moines, was at his parents home after employment in the Burlington ordnance plant prior to induction and release due to failing the physical exam.
A benefit party was held at the Community Building Saturday evening to aid the Moravia Free Public Library. Prizes were awarded from war savings stamps. Leaders included Mrs. Fred Blumenstock and several other local organizers with volunteers handling calls and arrangements.
A. M. and chaplain of the lodge at his death leaves 17 grandchildren and many relatives. He is survived by his wife, children, and friends, with parents, a step-father, two brothers and two sisters preceding him. A devoted husband and father, a loyal citizen and Christian, he also enjoyed poetry, and his words on eternal reunion are quoted from his poem Our First Reunion.

In Taylor township and Appanoose county a light vote was cast in the June primary with 158 votes, 11 Republicans and 48 Democrats. Nominations were made for all Appanoose county offices and state tickets show several contests. one or two Republican nominations may go to convention. Names include Wilson and Herring for U S Senator, Hickenlooper and Kraschel for Governor, Blue and Gillette for Lieutenant Governor, and Fagan and Hep for Secretary of State. County results list officials such as Treasurer Osborn and Sheriff Balley with party divisions noted. (Continued on page four)
In Appanoose county those who have not registered for canning sugar may sign up at the Mora via school building this Thursday from 1 to 5 o'clock. Bring family sugar ration books, know last year’s canned fruit, planned canning amount this year, and current on hand. Current allotment: four pounds per person plus one extra pound per person for jams and jellies. Registration targets those who did not register Friday and covers all county residents.

Mrs Fanchen Winsler hosted a farewell dinner for Mrs Rose Winsler who will extend a stay with Keygan in Portland Oregon. Attendees at the Lynch home included Mrs Hattie Duncan Mrs Laura Dun can of Albia Mrs J E Sharp of Centerville Mrs FP A Reich Mrs J W Halden Mrs T B Cameron Mrs J H Schreiner Mrs R E Cumming Mrs Q B Johnson Mrs Frank Selby and the honoree Mrs Winsler.
The Womens Society of Christian Service held its regular monthly meeting at the Moravia Methodist church with Mrs. Paul Broshar as hostess. Devotions by Mrs. Wilbur Harris focused on Suffer Little Children to Come Unto Me. Program lead by Mrs. Chester Broshar covered Children of Our Church and Our Hospitals. Mrs. Stella Carter read an open letter on Christian social relations and local church activities. Mrs. Fred Blumenstock spoke on Bennett College. Assisting hostesses were Mrs. Chester Broshar Mrs. Forrest Easter Mrs. Wilbur Harris and Mrs. Charles Broshar. A social hour followed. Friends of Lew Hiner regret his Sunday illness and wish him a quick recovery. Rev. Charles Ellis of Elliott visited Moravia homes en route to Cincinnati for Memorial Day with his sister Miss Nancy Ellis.
Moravia held its annual Memorial Day observance at 2 30 Saturday afternoon with ceremonies honoring deceased veterans of former wars. Basil Cowell Post of the American Legion assisted by the Auxiliary Unit and the Moravia school band directed by Wilbur Harris conducted the service. The procession to the Moravia cemetery included band veterans Auxiliary members and veterans families. Rev G M Talbott of the United Brethren church spoke on Living for Democracy. The band played America and America the Beautiful. Chester Byroshar read the names of deceased veterans and wreaths were placed by the children. The firing squad gave the salute and taps was sounded by Donald Brain and Mex Wren. Rev E L Pullman gave the invocation and benediction. After the cemetery services the band headed to the park for an afternoon concert.
The O E S Friendship meeting scheduled to be held next week has been indefinitely postponed. Worthy Matron Mrs. C A Burton is at Kirksville Missouri with her son Charles who was taken to Kirksville hospital Tuesday. Marguerite Berry of Oklahoma visited aunt Mye J W Halden Tuesday.
