Moravia school board moves to circulate petitions for a special July election to approve a $60,000 bond for blacktop surfacing at both the high school and elementary, including driveways, parking, and part of the playground. The earliest possible election date is July 12, with petitions to be circulated before a special meeting at 8 p.m.
Ray Charity began as a printer 41 years ago after a snowstorm redirected him into a Bonaparte print shop. He and his wife Kate built the Moravia Union into a weekly paper and a regional printing business, raising two children and traveling on National Newspaper Association study missions. They plan to stay in Moravia with retirement, keeping May's Ramblings columnist role and possibly more time for family and community work.
Robert Luse and Glenole Hixson marked their 74th wedding anniversary. The couple, married in 1903, still tends a garden and preserves, with support from family. An open house hosted about 100 guests from Moravia and nearby towns, celebrating a long married life despite past floods and hard farming years.
A Memorial Day scene at Lake Rathbun shows increased attendance and camping. Bob Hiatt of the Army Corps of Engineers reports 16 percent more attendees and 23 percent more camper registrations than last year, totaling about 176000 camper days over the holiday.
Moravia High School announced honor roll standings for the fourth nine week period. Seniors and juniors list multiple students achieving a B average or higher, followed by Sophomores Freshmen and eighth and seventh graders with named students across grades.
The Moravia paving project bids were opened with Callup Construction Company of Decorah the low bidder at 6 529 28 dollars for a 22 foot wide pavement with three four foot shoulders Drainage will use vee ditches along both sides The county engineer Marvis MouGahney notes Class A concrete is 25 percent stronger than Class B The Unionville to county line section uses this type and appears to be building well The completion target is April 8 1977 with work to start days before completion The Board of Supervisors must accept the bid and expect to do so soon
