Workmen removed two large maple trees on the north side of the square to make way for a new building by M. H. Johnson. The trees, longtime shade providers in the business district, are being cut down as the landmark square gives way to a modern brick structure.
Monroe County voters Tuesday rejected a proposed 600000 road bond issue to pave county roads by a margin of about 600 votes. Unofficial returns show 3047 in favor and 2404 against. The year’s turnout marked a large increase over the prior year.

B F Schwartz delivering the principal address. A poultry and pig clinic by E A McCain of Omaha will be held June 2 at Crystal Theatre, offering free post mortem exams and disease prevention guidance with no admission or sales.

Ledisa Elizabeth Norton, born June 11 1850 in Missouri, died May 27 1927 at Des Moines Iowa aged 72 years 11 months 16 days. Wife of William Norton, long resident on a Moravia farm. Remains brought to Moravia, service at Christian church, burial in Moravia cemetery with many old friends present.
C. Fe, Main and C. C. Waughop have begun building their first Tractor Hay Stacker after months of planning. A miniature model has been shown at the Waughop Motor Co. and the device, mounted on a Fordson tractor, acts as stacker, loader and wake.
J C Graham of Des Moines deputy fame warden visited Moravia last week and brought wild pheasants intended for propagation. Birds were released at Winsler farm east of town as part of a state plan to place a few in each section. Hunters are cautioned to ensure no harm comes to these birds.

Roscoe Smith former Moravia barber shop proprietor died in Des Moines on Saturday May 28 after ill health forced him to leave town. He had been taken there for treatment and funeral services were held at Union Chapel Church south of Blakesburg on Monday May 30 with a large turnout of neighbors.
A string of petty thefts were reported in recent days with incidents in Centerville and Albin. Neil Burton had his spare tire and rim stolen while visiting friends in Centerville on Thursday evening, and R. J. Funkhouser was robbed of the same item in Albin on Saturday evening.
