Four Barriers To Soil Conservation in Iowa study
Iowa State College researchers surveyed 144 western Iowa farmers about erosion and conservation. They identified four barriers: cost and practicality of changing to erosion control practices, tenants' lease terms, high debts and living expenses, and skepticism about effectiveness. Farmers overestimate required gains and differ from technical targets, with many reluctant to adopt contour plowing or terracing.
