Town crews tackle dusty rock problem as blacktopping uses up chips near Rathbun lake. Officials seek cleaner rock for further local paving while residents note unseasonable cool spells and late summer boating at Rathbun. Art and Janet Fox and son-in-law recalled a dusk tour of the western lake area.
The report describes a Tuesday evening outing on Rathbun Lake where darkness and navigation by stars and beacon light guided the return to the ramp after misalignments with the south shore. It notes rough water prospects with winds and deeper water potentially altering conditions and cites ongoing extensive road construction around the Rathbun area with several main roads nearing completion.
Mrs. Nadine Dommer reports Burdette Ward came home by ambulance Thursday after eight weeks of hospitalization at Town City. He has welcomed a steady stream of visitors since his return. Nearby friends and relatives, including Rod Passaralli and the Nasal road household, visited over the week, with several others traveling from Grand Island and Mankato to share meals and greetings.
A series of visits and dinners are noted across Centerville Ottumwa Perry and nearby, with numerous families including the Hayes Moore Walter Faber and Griffin households hosting relatives and friends. A coop dinner honored Francis Griffin and Harry Clark prior to their Monday wedding in Nebraska.
News notice from Union Township reports the Roland family reunion on Sunday July 19 at the Moravia community building. Attendees included Mae Harper, George and Gary Scott and families, Burdett Cox and Nyle, many Cox relatives, Petersons, Tomblins, Bailey, Ball Sherwood, Burton, and others. Guests of honor Bobby Sherwood celebrated his birthday with Harold Burton. Additional visits and social calls followed through Monday with gatherings and hay work.

Salem social roundup lists Tuesday evening calls at Loyd Brown home and dinners for Mrs. Whitehead's birthday at Maple Buffet Knoxville. It notes swimming at Centerville pool and visits to Des Moines homes, plus Topeka guests, showers for Karol Wadle, and Ottumwa weekend lodging.
Last week in Appanoose County and surrounding areas residents shared celebrations and visits. Clarence Whitehead hosted ice cream and cake with family including Larry and Maude Whitehead and Ruby, while Sey mour hosted a 50th wedding anniversary for Reo Bryant and others. Picnic gatherings occurred at Rathbun Dam and Appanoose fairground with attendances from Hellyer, Coulson, DeWitt and Turner families. Funeral attendance included Mrs. Vern Turner with a Williams Funeral Home visit and service in Knoxville.
The Board of Supervisors of Appanoose County Iowa will meet August 5 1970 at 2 00 PM at Courthouse Centerville Iowa. Taxpayers may be heard for or against the budget estimate and copies of Schedule 634 A detailing receipts and expenditures are available from the County Auditor upon request.
The Independent Pioneers held a July 8 1970 meeting at the Brushy Community building with 16 members and five visitors. Marvin Martin chaired and John Sulser led the pledge. 4-H reports followed from Doug Moore, Bobby Mitchell, and Mary Jo McDonalds. July 13 set for shearing 4-H calves and fair sheet work discussed. Nicky Dicks led the 4-H pledge. Brenda Mitchell and Mary Jo McDonalds adjourned. Betty Sulser served refreshments. Reporter Kathy Martin.
The Franklin Happy Helpers held a regular meeting at the home of Mrs. Glennie Dicks. The session was called to order and proceeded with standard opening procedures.
At 7 30 by the president Elaine Christy roll call was answered by 12 members secretary and treasurer reports were read old and new business discussed a thank you from Catherine Beaty plans for the achievement show were made for July 24 at the Iconium Methodist Church open to the public delicious refreshments enjoyed by 11 members one visitor and two leaders reporter Carol Christy
