The Centerville area discusses Weather Corporation of America rainmaking as farmers seek relief from drought. Citizens debate faith and science while noting Moravia received a quarter inch of rain early week, and many farmers haul water for livestock amid scarce rainfall.
A quarter inch set tled dust and light muck washing over green crops with drizzle continuing Tuesday night. Local totals reached about a half inch with some outlying areas reporting up to an inch. Despite hardship, northern areas show bumper crops while two to three years of wet weather may be needed to restore wells. The community also mourns the death of Buck Yates, a returning veteran with plans for civilian life.
Udell and Centerville social notes report visits among residents including Mrs H B Spring and Mr and Mrs Theodore Murdy of Moulton, Mrs Paul Cushman of Centerville, and local arrivals. It notes the death of George Exline 33 in Centerville and funeral services at Grace Tabernacle with Rev Fay Garner officiating.

West Point notes recount Sunday visits among Hoffman Argo and Exline families and friends. Local gatherings include the Argo and Hagerman households with callers from Albia Ottumwa Lincoln Nebr Monmouth Ill and Leon. Several earn modest mentions of work and travel.
Jane Ann and Joan Fox visited Martha McCord on Friday while Cass Hamilton and others joined Lloyd Brown for a birthday. Several families shared time visiting, hosting club meetings, farming events, and Sunday gatherings across Salem including the McCord and Jennings households.
Miss Sharon Walter visited Perry on Saturday for a week with her aunt and uncle. Des Moines relatives Dwight and Junior Andrews stayed with C. H. Andrews family Wednesday. Albia's Irma McNeal and family joined Cecil Comstock dinner guests Tuesday. Iva Strunk returned after attending the double funeral of Dillion Hunt and wife in Rockford. Lee Tadlock hosted dinner with Ray Tubaugh and Drenda Gee. Newton’s C A Plummer spent the weekend with Nellie Williams.
Mrs. Bud Walter and family attended the funeral of Mrs. Miranda Phillips in Centerville. Several families hosted or visited relatives across Moravia Belle Plaine Colfax and surrounding areas with moves to Moravia and Newark New Jersey, plus travel to Los Angeles. Connie Walter joined a birthday party for Marie Van Dorin in Moravia as others visited kin and shared weekends.
Wheat growers in Appanoose county join a national referendum on July 23 to decide if marketing quotas will continue for the 1955 crop. A two thirds vote is needed to keep quotas, with price support tied to staying within allotments. Notices will be mailed around July 14 and voting runs 9 am to 8 pm at the ASC office in Centerville.
Sunday and Monday social roundups include the Christy Ellarton and Andrews households in Mystic Centerville and surrounding areas.
