Agricultural insights from Iowa State College on yield and crop care
Research shows in the row weed growth can cut soybean yields by about 10 percent. E R Duncan an agronomist from Iowa State College notes meadowland should build soil supply nitrogen control weeds and erosion and provide high quality livestock feed. An engineer at Iowa State College says yield savings over two bushels per acre could cover the cost of granular insecticide for corn borers. Supplemental dairy cow feed during summer drought can prevent a milk slump while thorough watering helps prevent loss of perennials and young trees. Entomologist Earle Raun advises applying DDT to control first brood corn borers when 75 percent of plants show leaf feeding signs.

Gary Charity reported on the Ames short course attended and Carl VanZante explained the sentry system for this year’s county fair. Seed pods on perennials indicate plant food needs. removing pods early boosts next season’s blossoms. Iowa State College engineers find field repairs and adjustments are the prime time wasters.
